Background Music mode is one of those features that sounds gimmicky until you actually try it—then it kind of makes perfect sense.
Here's what it does: instead of music playing directly in your ears like normal earphones, it makes the sound feel like it's coming from speakers across the room. The audio gets spread out and pushed away from you acoustically. It's weird at first, but surprisingly useful.
Sony gives you three presets to choose from in the WF-1000XM6:
My Room is the most subtle. Music still feels fairly present, just a bit softer and less direct. Good for relaxing or light tasks.
Living Room pushes things further away. It feels more like background music playing while you're doing something else.
Cafe goes the furthest. The music becomes ambient noise rather than something you're actively listening to. Great when you need to focus but silence feels too... silent.
I think this feature really shines for work-from-home situations. You know how some people put on the TV just for background noise? This is like that, but with your own music. The lyrics become less prominent, so if you're trying to write or read, you're not competing with vocals in your head.
It's also great for instrumental music or lo-fi beats when you just want something there without it demanding your attention. Find it in the Sound settings of the Sony Sound Connect app—takes two seconds to set up.
Honestly, I was skeptical, but it's become one of my most-used features. Not something I expected from a pair of earbuds.
