Comparison

Product data APIs compared

Product data APIs fall into a few kinds: barcode databases that return product details, marketplace APIs that go deep on one store, multi-retailer price APIs, dataset vendors, and search-results scrapers. Which one fits depends on what you send (a barcode, an ASIN, a URL, a keyword) and what you need back (details, today's prices, or history). This page lays the main options side by side with what each vendor publishes, checked on the date shown.

The kinds of product data API

  • Barcode databases (Barcode Lookup, Go-UPC, UPCitemdb) answer "what is this product?" and some add current store prices.
  • Marketplace-specific APIs (Keepa for Amazon) answer deep questions about one marketplace: sales rank, sellers, long histories.
  • Multi-retailer price APIs (ShopSavvy) answer "what does this cost at each store, and how has that moved?" for an identifier.
  • Dataset vendors (Datafiniti) and price-collection services (PriceAPI) sell records or collection jobs rather than instant lookups.
  • Shopping SERP APIs return what a search engine's shopping results page shows for a keyword, which is keyword-driven and changes with the engine's layout.

How to evaluate

Input:
Barcode, ASIN, URL, model number or keyword. Pick an API that accepts what your users or catalog already have.
Retailer coverage:
One marketplace or many stores. Check whether the retailers your users care about are included.
Price freshness:
Does each price carry the time it was seen, and can you schedule re-checks?
History:
History cannot be collected retroactively. If you will chart prices, check how far back the vendor goes.
Pricing model:
Per request, per credit, per token or per record. Price your real monthly volume, including misses.
Integration:
SDKs, formats (JSON, CSV), webhooks and documentation quality decide how long the first version takes.

Questions

What is the difference between a barcode API and a price API?

A barcode API turns a code into product details (name, brand, images, attributes). A price API returns current offers (retailer, price, availability) for a product, and the better ones keep history. Some barcode APIs add a snapshot of store prices; ShopSavvy returns the product record plus timestamped offers and history.

Is there a free product data API?

UPCitemdb has a free tier (100 requests a day, no signup). The ShopSavvy Data API has no free tier but a 14-day Starter trial, and the ShopSavvy MCP server is free without a key for AI assistants.

Which API has the longest price history?

For Amazon alone, Keepa. Across retailers, ShopSavvy keeps hundreds of millions of price observations with price history back to 2011, dense from 2019. Barcode databases generally do not offer dated history.

How we compared

Each vendor's facts come from its public pages, read on the dates below; where its own page could not be read we cite a third-party listing. The list covers options we have checked and is not exhaustive. We make ShopSavvy, so weigh our entry accordingly. Corrections: business@shopsavvy.com.
