The Sony WF-1000XM6 includes four sizes of ear tips (SS, S, M, L) made from Sony's distinctive polyurethane foam material. Proper fit is essential for both comfort and noise cancellation effectiveness.
Included Ear Tips
| Size | Description | |------|-------------| | SS | Extra small | | S | Small | | M | Medium (pre-installed) | | L | Large |
Material: Polyurethane foam—feels between silicone and memory foam
Design: Same tip design Sony has used since the WF-1000XM4 (2021)
How Sony's Tips Work
Unlike standard silicone tips, Sony's polyurethane tips:
- Compress slightly during insertion
- Expand slowly to create a custom seal
- Provide better grip than pure silicone
- Deliver improved passive noise isolation
Using the Fit Test
The Sony Sound Connect app includes an "Optimal Earbud Tips" feature:
- Plays test tones through each earbud
- Analyzes acoustic seal quality
- Indicates whether seal is adequate
- Recommends trying different sizes if needed
Run this test before evaluating ANC performance—poor seal dramatically reduces noise cancellation effectiveness.
Fit Optimization Tips
- Start larger: Try M or L first, then work smaller
- Different ears: Left and right may need different sizes
- Twist insertion: Gentle rotation helps tips seat properly
- Allow adjustment: Give ears 30-60 minutes to adapt to new tips
- Re-test: Run fit test after any tip or position change
Common Experiences
The polyurethane material generates mixed opinions—some users report excellent all-day comfort, while others find the tips stiffer than expected. If stock tips don't work, aftermarket alternatives like Comply foam tips are compatible with the XM6.
