Yes, the Sony WF-1000XM6 charging case is noticeably larger than the WF-1000XM5 case—one of the more criticized changes in this generation.
Size Comparison
| Aspect | XM5 Case | XM6 Case | |--------|----------|----------| | Footprint | Compact | ~15-20% larger | | Height | Short | Taller | | Thickness | Slim | Slightly thicker | | Pocket presence | Barely noticeable | More noticeable |
The XM5 case was praised as one of the most compact premium earbud cases available.
Why Sony Increased Size
1. Redesigned earbud shape The XM6's new pill-shaped design (vs. XM5's egg shape) required a completely different case geometry.
2. Improved hinge Metal hinge replaces the XM5's plastic hinge, which some users found flimsy. More durable and premium-feeling.
3. Better visibility More prominent LED indicator for battery status.
4. Flat surfaces Case stands upright on desks and tables—more stable placement.
What Didn't Improve
Battery capacity unchanged: Despite the larger size, case still provides ~16 additional hours (24 total)—identical to XM5. Many expected more capacity to justify the size increase.
Practical Impact
| Consideration | Assessment | |--------------|------------| | Tight pants pockets | More noticeable | | Jacket pockets/bags | Fits fine | | Desk stability | Improved | | Hinge durability | Improved |
Bottom Line
For most users, the larger case isn't a dealbreaker—just a trade-off. If ultra-compact carrying is essential, consider the WF-1000XM5 at discounted prices, which maintains the smaller case design with similar features.
