The Sony WH-1000XM6 delivers excellent sound quality, but the default bass-heavy tuning benefits from EQ adjustments.
Default Sound Signature
Out of the box with EQ disabled:
- Prominent bass that can overshadow other frequencies
- Congested midrange some describe as 'muddy'
- Recessed treble reducing sparkle and detail
This works for bass-heavy genres (hip-hop, EDM) but sounds less ideal for acoustic, classical, or vocal music.
Technical Performance
Testing reveals strong capabilities when properly equalized:
| Metric | Score | |--------|-------| | Timbre | 4.9/5 | | Distortion | 4.3/5 | | Immersiveness | 4.6/5 | | Overall | 4.8/5 |
The 30mm carbon fiber drivers deliver detailed sound with treble extension to ~16kHz.
EQ Recommendations
The Sony Sound Connect app includes a 10-band equalizer.
Starting adjustments for balanced sound:
- Reduce 60-200Hz by 2-4dB
- Boost 1-4kHz by 1-2dB
- Lift 8-16kHz slightly for detail
Available presets: Bright, Excited, Mellow, Relaxed, Vocal, Treble Boost, Bass Boost, Speech
Bottom Line
The WH-1000XM6 has flagship-quality audio hardware. A few minutes with the equalizer reveals impressive detail, clarity, and soundstage that justify the price.
