Yes, the Sony WH-1000XM6 supports LDAC, Sony's high-resolution Bluetooth codec transmitting up to 990 kbps.
Codec Support
| Codec | Bitrate | Platform | |-------|---------|----------| | LDAC | Up to 990 kbps | Android only | | AAC | ~256 kbps | iOS, Mac, Android | | LC3 | Variable | LE Audio devices | | SBC | ~328 kbps | Universal |
LDAC Requirements
- Android device (iPhones don't support LDAC)
- Hi-res source material (Tidal, Amazon Music HD, Qobuz, local files)
- LDAC enabled in phone's Bluetooth settings
Key Limitations
- Multipoint disables LDAC: Both connections drop to AAC/SBC
- Battery impact: Higher power consumption on both devices
- Stability: May drop in congested wireless environments
Practical Reality
Most listeners can't distinguish LDAC from AAC in blind tests with compressed streaming audio. LDAC benefits become apparent with:
- True hi-res files (24-bit/96kHz+)
- Quiet, focused listening environments
- Hi-fi streaming services
For iPhone Users
AAC sounds excellent on the WH-1000XM6. Don't let LDAC unavailability be a dealbreaker.
Maximum Quality
Use the included 3.5mm cable with headphones powered on. This bypasses Bluetooth while maintaining enhanced audio processing.
