Yes, the Sony WH-1000XM6 ear pads are removable and replaceable. Given the comfort complaints about stock pads, this is welcome news.
Stock Pad Issues
Sony's factory ear pads:
- Compress quickly
- Don't provide enough depth for many ears
- Allow ears to press against inner mesh and ANC mic
Recommended Upgrade
The Wicked Cushions WC PadZ XM6 (~$23) is the most popular aftermarket option:
| Feature | Stock Pads | WC PadZ XM6 | |---------|------------|-------------| | Depth | Shallow | Additional mm clearance | | Foam density | Compresses quickly | Denser, holds shape | | Breathability | Standard | Improved | | Material | Standard PU | Higher-quality PU leather |
Installation
Tool-free, under one minute:
- Gently pull off old pads (they detach easily)
- Align new pads with earcup
- Press firmly until they snap in place
Sound and ANC Impact
Aftermarket pads maintain:
- Original sound signature
- Full ANC effectiveness
- Proper seal for noise cancellation
Bottom Line
While it's frustrating that a $449 flagship benefits from a $23 upgrade, the WC PadZ XM6 transforms comfort significantly. Worth considering if you plan extended listening sessions.
