The Sony WH-1000XM6 performs well for phone calls and video conferencing, making it suitable for remote work.
Microphone Performance
Sony upgraded to 12 microphones (from 8 on XM5), with six powering an AI beamforming system that isolates your voice from background noise.
| Environment | Call Quality | |-------------|-------------| | Quiet home office | Excellent | | Cafe/coworking space | Very Good | | Outdoor with wind | Good |
User survey results: 53% rate microphone quality 4/5 or higher. Mean opinion score: 3.6/5 across 1,200+ respondents.
Bluetooth Audio Limitation
When the microphone activates, Bluetooth switches from A2DP to HFP profile, reducing audio quality to 16-bit/16kHz. Music will sound noticeably worse during calls.
Mac workaround: In Sound settings, select MacBook microphone for input while keeping XM6 as audio output. This maintains high-quality audio during calls.
Call Control Features
- Answer/reject gestures: Nod to answer, shake head to reject (enable in app)
- Mute toggle: Double-tap NC/AMB button during calls
- Speak-to-Chat: Automatically pauses music when you speak
Bottom Line
The WH-1000XM6 handles business calls and video conferences well. The upgraded microphone array with wind noise reduction makes these practical for daily work use.
