The Sony WH-1000XM6 works for gaming, but performance depends on your connection method.
Wired Connection: Best for Gaming
Use the included 3.5mm auxiliary cable for zero-latency audio. This is essential for competitive gaming where timing matters. ANC remains functional with the headphones powered on.
Wireless Gaming Performance
Bluetooth 5.3 with LE Audio support enables a Low Latency mode via the Sony Sound Connect app.
| Connection | Latency | |------------|---------| | Standard LDAC/SBC | 100-200ms | | AAC/LC3 (Low Latency) | 30-50ms | | Wired (3.5mm) | <5ms |
At 30-50ms, wireless works well for:
- Story-driven games
- RPGs and strategy games
- Casual single-player experiences
Wireless falls short for:
- Competitive FPS (Call of Duty, Valorant)
- Fighting games
- Rhythm games
Key Limitations
- No USB-C audio: Low-latency digital audio through USB-C is not supported
- Console compatibility: No direct Bluetooth connection to PS5/Xbox. Requires Bluetooth adapter or TV connection
- LE Audio required: Low Latency mode needs a compatible device
Bottom Line
For casual and single-player gaming, the XM6 performs well wirelessly. For competitive gaming, always use the wired cable.
