TLDR Review: Wyze Cam V3
Verdict
The Wyze Cam OG offers excellent image quality, solid night vision, and useful smart features packed into a waterproof design—making it one of the better budget indoor/outdoor cameras in terms of raw performance. However, be prepared for a *rocky ride* with multiple firmware updates, unreliable Wi-Fi connectivity, persistent unwanted notifications, and the frustration of an aggressive subscription model that charges extra for features once included in earlier versions. Also, weather resistance can be hit or miss, so it’s not the most dependable choice if you want truly worry-free outdoor use. If you need hassle-free outdoor security without the subscription headaches, it’s worth considering other brands or older Wyze models that don’t push subscriptions so hard.
- Top pro:
- Impressive 1080p video quality with outstanding color night vision, providing clear footage even in very low or no light conditions.
- Top con:
- Frequent firmware updates are needed to ensure stable operation, which can be tedious and frustrating.
Pros
- •Impressive 1080p video quality with outstanding color night vision, providing clear footage even in very low or no light conditions.
- •Simple setup process that generally requires minimal steps to get started.
- •Waterproof IP65 rating and rugged design eliminate the need for extra outdoor housing, making it truly usable indoors or outdoors.
- •Excellent panoramic view with no dead spots, thanks to the pan and tilt feature.
- •Supports local storage via SD cards, so you can use basic recording features without any subscription fees.
- •Two-way audio and AI detection for people, pets, and sounds add useful smart home capabilities, though not perfect.
Cons
- •Frequent firmware updates are needed to ensure stable operation, which can be tedious and frustrating.
- •The camera often loses Wi-Fi connection and requires manual unplugging to restore function, making it unreliable for unattended monitoring.
- •The new automatic repositioning feature is problematic, with the camera frequently turning to irrelevant zones like walls or eaves, forcing constant manual correction.
- •Excessive unwanted notifications triggered by minor bugs, weather elements like raindrops or snowflakes, flood users with alerts they don’t want.
- •Subscription model feels like a cash grab: smart alert features require the $19.99/year Cam Plus subscription, and costs balloon to $130/year for multiple cameras, which alienates loyal customers.
- •The bolt locking mechanism that holds the camera unit often loosens during panning, causing instability or noise.
- •Several users report water intrusion during rain, despite its IP65 rating, calling into question its weatherproof claims.
- •AI detection remains somewhat inaccurate, producing false alerts and requiring trial and error to tweak sensitivity.
- •The ceiling mount design changed, meaning existing users may need to buy adapters for their setups.
- •Limited warranty of one year leaves little breathing room if the camera fails after exposure to weather.
