TLDR Review: Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection PS3
Verdict
*Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection for PlayStation 3* is the ultimate official package for fans wanting to experience or revisit the Metal Gear saga in one convenient set. While setup can be a bit fiddly due to PSN downloads and regional language quirks, the inclusion of Metal Gear Solid 4 alone makes this collection worth owning for any serious fan. If you want more spin-offs or Portable Ops, you might need to look elsewhere, but for the core, canonical story and enhanced classics, this collection delivers fantastic value. For the best experience of these legendary titles tied to PlayStation, this is the way to go.
- Top pro:
- Includes almost all canonical Metal Gear Solid games from MGS1 through MGS4 and Peace Walker, plus the original MSX Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, providing a nearly complete experience of the series’ core storyline and origins.
- Top con:
- Metal Gear Solid 1 and VR Missions are download-only via PSN codes, which requires PSN access and a US account, potentially complicating setup or play for some users.
Pros
- •Includes almost all canonical Metal Gear Solid games from MGS1 through MGS4 and Peace Walker, plus the original MSX Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, providing a nearly complete experience of the series’ core storyline and origins.
- •Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a standout exclusive that cannot be emulated on PC, making this collection essential for PS3 owners and fans.
- •The HD Collection disc offers crystal-clear enhanced graphics for MGS2, MGS3, and Peace Walker, refreshing the classics nicely.
- •Great value offering 8 games spanning 6 platforms in one package, significantly more content than the Xbox 360 HD Collection which lacks several titles.
- •Includes Metal Gear Solid VR Missions as a digital download along with unique features like the orbital camera view in MGS1 and extras like classic MSX games within MGS3’s menu.
- •The collection supports trophy hunting, with challenging platinum trophies especially in MGS2 and MGS3 that add replay value.
- •Provides the best way currently to experience the series’ main titles officially on a modern platform before any potential future remasters.
- •The physical set comes with two discs: one for the HD Collection games and MGS4, which keeps the overall package organized and accessible.
- •Ideal for both newcomers wanting a full Metal Gear saga experience and longtime fans seeking a convenient, official compilation.
Cons
- •Metal Gear Solid 1 and VR Missions are download-only via PSN codes, which requires PSN access and a US account, potentially complicating setup or play for some users.
- •Some older titles (Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2) are only accessible through menus inside MGS3, rather than standalone discs or downloads, which can feel a bit hidden.
- •DualShock 4 controller compatibility varies by game—works smoothly for MGS1 and MGS4 but not all HD Collection titles, affecting gameplay experience for some.
- •Excludes spin-offs and non-canonical titles like Metal Gear Acid, Portable Ops, and Metal Gear Solid V, which might disappoint fans wanting the absolutely complete library.
- •All PSX games are only available in English, while most other games in the collection are in Spanish, which could be a language barrier for some players.
- •The collection is not a seamless plug-and-play set; PSN downloads and multiple discs mean some setup and disc swapping is necessary.
- •The MGS1 codec frequency hint refers to the physical case, so knowing the correct contact frequency (140.15) online is required for a better experience, which is a small inconvenience.
