The front camera on the iPhone 17 Pro Max is genuinely different. Apple put in a square sensor, which changes how you take selfies and video calls.

Why a square sensor matters:

Normal cameras have rectangular sensors. Hold vertically, get portrait. Rotate, get landscape.

The square sensor captures a larger area in all directions. Software crops to whatever orientation you want. Take a landscape selfie without holding your phone sideways. Record vertical video while keeping the phone horizontal.
