The front camera on the iPhone 17 Pro Max is genuinely different. Apple put in a square sensor, which changes how you take selfies and video calls.
Why a square sensor matters:
Normal cameras have rectangular sensors. Hold vertically, get portrait. Rotate, get landscape.
The square sensor captures a larger area in all directions. Software crops to whatever orientation you want. Take a landscape selfie without holding your phone sideways. Record vertical video while keeping the phone horizontal.
Center Stage is the bigger deal:
During video calls or recordings, the camera follows you. Walk around the kitchen on FaceTime? It pans to keep you centered. Someone else joins? It automatically widens.
This works because the square sensor captures more than what's shown on screen. Center Stage crops and pans within that larger area with no noticeable quality loss.
The spec improvements:
18MP, up from 12MP. More resolution gives room for Center Stage to crop while maintaining quality. There's also actual autofocus now. Previous iPhones had fixed focus on the front camera.
The Vision Pro feature:
The front camera supports spatial video for Apple's headset. Combined with rear cameras, you can create 3D content.
