Do You Need a Screen Protector for the iPhone 17 Pro Max?
The iPhone 17 Pro Max has impressive built-in protection. Whether you need a screen protector depends on your habits and priorities.
What Ceramic Shield 2 Provides
- 3x better scratch resistance than original Ceramic Shield
- New anti-reflective coating (~2% reflectance)
- Strong drop protection
- Still vulnerable to sand, some keys, and materials rated 6-7+ on the Mohs hardness scale
The Anti-Reflective Trade-off
Standard screen protectors eliminate the anti-reflective benefits:
| Configuration | Reflectance | |--------------|-------------| | Bare iPhone 17 Pro Max | 2.0% | | With generic protector | 4.6% | | With AR protector (Astropad) | 1.0% |
The anti-reflective coating needs direct air contact. Covering it with glass and adhesive cancels the effect.
When to Skip the Protector
- You're careful with your phone
- You prioritize anti-reflective outdoor visibility
- No keys or coins share your phone pocket
- You avoid sandy/gritty environments
When to Use a Protector
- You've scratched phones before
- Your phone shares pocket space with hard objects
- You drop phones occasionally
- Peace of mind matters
Best Options That Preserve AR
If you want both protection and anti-reflective benefits:
- Astropad Fresh Coat: 1% reflectance (better than bare screen)
- BodyGuardz Apex Ceramic: AR coating, 20x stronger than tempered glass
- Mous Ceramic: Military-grade with anti-reflective properties
Standard tempered glass works but noticeably increases glare outdoors.
