ProRes RAW is the most advanced video format your iPhone 17 Pro Max can shoot. You probably don't need it.
What it does:
Normal video processes the image as you record. Color temperature, contrast, exposure. Locked in.
ProRes RAW keeps raw sensor data. Everything stays adjustable in post. Change color temperature completely. Pull detail from shadows or highlights. The data is there.
Why professionals use it:
Filmmakers matching iPhone B-roll with cinema cameras need this flexibility. Commercial productions with extensive color grading benefit.
Why most people don't need it:
Files are massive. 6-8 GB per minute at 4K. A 10-minute shoot means 60-80 GB. Need 1TB or 2TB storage, or external SSD.
Editing requires professional software. Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro. And a powerful computer.
If your footage isn't getting heavy color grading, standard ProRes or Dolby Vision video is more practical.
The honest recommendation:
If you're asking whether you need ProRes RAW, you probably don't. For everyone else, standard video options are more than enough.
