The iPhone 17 Pro Max has an IP68 water resistance rating. Here's what that means and how to protect your investment.
IP68 Rating Explained
- IP = Ingress Protection
- 6 = Dust-tight (complete protection against dust)
- 8 = Water-resistant to 6 meters (about 20 feet) for up to 30 minutes
This rating is tested under laboratory conditions using fresh water.
What the IP68 Rating Protects Against
Your iPhone 17 Pro Max can handle:
- Accidental drops in pools, sinks, or toilets
- Rain and splashes
- Spilled drinks
- Brief shallow underwater photos
What to Avoid
Despite the rating, Apple advises against:
- Swimming with the phone
- Showering with the phone
- Exposure to pressurized water
- Submersion in salt water or chlorinated pools
- Saunas and steam rooms
Important Limitations
- Water resistance decreases over time as seals age
- Physical damage can compromise water resistance
- Salt water, chlorine, and soaps are more damaging than fresh water
- Apple's warranty does not cover water damage, even with IP68 rating
If Your iPhone Gets Wet
- Remove it from water immediately
- Gently tap it against your palm with the port facing down
- Let it air dry completely before charging
- Do not use external heat sources
- Do not insert anything into the ports
- Do not charge until completely dry
Bottom Line
The IP68 rating provides protection against everyday accidents. Treat it as insurance for mishaps, not permission for deliberate water exposure. Your phone can survive accidental submersion, but intentional swimming or showering is still risky.
