The iPhone 17 Pro Max features Ceramic Shield 2 on the front display and adds Ceramic Shield to the back for the first time, offering significantly improved durability.
Ceramic Shield 2 Improvements
| Feature | Improvement | |---------|-------------| | Scratch resistance | 3x better than iPhone 16 Pro Max | | Drop protection | 4x better than standard glass | | Back glass | Ceramic Shield (new) with 4x crack resistance | | Oleophobic coating | Enhanced fingerprint resistance |
What It Resists
Daily items that won't scratch:
- Keys and coins
- Normal pocket contents
- General wear and handling
Materials that can still cause damage:
- Sand and silica particles
- Concrete surfaces
- Extreme impacts
Drop Test Results
Independent testing shows the iPhone 17 Pro Max typically survives:
- Face-down drops from 4-6 feet
- Multiple sequential drops
- Various angle impacts
Back Glass Protection (New)
For the first time, the back features Ceramic Shield:
- 4x crack resistance vs previous generation
- Matte finish reduces fingerprints
- Better protection for MagSafe accessories
Screen Protector Recommendations
| User Type | Recommendation | |-----------|---------------| | Careful/office user | Optional | | Active lifestyle | Recommended | | Outdoor/construction work | Essential |
For maximum protection, pair with a tempered glass screen protector and a case with raised bezels.
Bottom line: Ceramic Shield 2 is impressive, but a $15 screen protector remains smart insurance for a $1,300 device.
