Yes, the iPhone 17 Pro Max has Emergency SOS via satellite. It could save your life.
The scenario:
You're hiking somewhere remote. No cell signal. You get hurt. Satellite SOS lets you contact emergency services anyway.
How to use it:
Try calling 911 normally. iPhone offers the satellite option when there's no signal. Follow on-screen prompts to point at the sky. Answer text-based questions about your emergency. Apple's relay centers contact 911 and share your location.
Why text instead of calling:
Satellites don't have enough bandwidth for voice. Text gets through even with marginal connections. Slower but more reliable.
Beyond emergencies:
Roadside assistance via satellite. Car breaks down in a dead zone? Request a tow.
Find My via satellite. Family can see your location when you're off-grid. Great for hikers and remote travelers.
The fine print:
Needs clear sky view. Free for first two years. Subscription pricing after that not yet announced.
Where it works:
US, Canada, UK, Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan.
