Let me give you the honest answer: No, you shouldn't swim with your iPhone 17 Pro Max, even though it has impressive water resistance.
The reality:
The IP68 rating means your phone survived 6 meters of fresh water for 30 minutes in a laboratory. Controlled conditions with still, clean water at room temperature. Swimming is nothing like that.
Why pools are a problem:
Chlorine eats away at the seals that keep water out. One dip probably won't kill your phone. Regular swimming sessions? That's asking for trouble.
Why hot tubs are worse:
Heat accelerates seal degradation. Chemicals plus elevated temperatures compound the damage. Steam can get into places liquid water can't.
Why the ocean is risky:
Salt is highly corrosive. It can damage USB-C charging contacts, potentially leaving you with a phone that won't charge. Not covered under warranty.
The physics issue:
Swimming creates fluctuating pressure changes. Jumping or diving creates impact forces that can temporarily exceed the phone's rating.
The aging issue:
Water resistance degrades over time. Drops, temperature changes, normal wear. A phone that survived a dunk on day one might fail two years later.
Apple's warranty:
Doesn't cover liquid damage. Even with IP68. Water damage means out-of-pocket repairs.
What works:
Get a waterproof case from Catalyst or Pelican. Purpose-built for underwater use.
