TLDR Review: Yamaha R-N800A Receiver
Verdict
The Yamaha R-N800A Network Receiver is a fantastic choice if you want a muscular, clean-sounding 2-channel integrated amp with modern streaming capabilities and a great DAC for your digital music. It shines in delivering spacious, high-fidelity sound with lots of connectivity options, making it excellent for music lovers who want simplicity without sacrificing performance. However, vinyl aficionados should consider an external phono preamp for the best sound, and if multi-channel home theater or renaming inputs matter to you, you might want to look elsewhere. Overall, it’s an elegant, reliable, and well-engineered piece of gear that pairs best with quality speakers and a powered subwoofer for a superb 2.1 setup. Pros
- •Combines an integrated amplifier and network streamer effectively for a streamlined audio experience.
- •Delivers incredibly clean, detailed, and powerful sound with 100W per channel, easily driving subwoofers and various speaker types.
- •Creates a vast and well-separated 3D soundstage with clear instrument positioning, enhancing listening pleasure.
- •Built-in DAC accessible via USB offers high-quality music playback directly from computers, supporting lossless and high-resolution streaming services like Apple Music, Qobuz, and Tidal.
- •Simple and intuitive phone app provides extensive setup and playback options, improving user experience.
- •YPAO automatic speaker calibration is straightforward and generally accurate, enhancing sound quality when used thoughtfully (though some prefer it off).
- •Excellent build quality and reliability consistent with Yamaha’s reputation, paired with a vintage-inspired silver design.
- •Integrated phono input allows direct connection for vinyl playback, supporting users with turntables (though with limitations).
- •Combines traditional receiver features with modern streaming services, eliminating the need for additional devices.
- •Works flawlessly with many input sources including optical, coaxial, AirPlay, Bluetooth, and USB-DAC for versatile connectivity.
Cons
- •Phono input is underpowered; most vinyl enthusiasts recommend using a separate phono preamp for improved sound quality.
- •Volume levels vary noticeably between input sources (e.g., turntable vs. CD), requiring manual adjustment to balance sound.
- •Remote control’s plastic construction feels cheap and less durable compared to the rest of the receiver’s solid build.
- •Streaming can be inconsistent with certain apps, particularly Amazon Music, which may freeze and require system resetting; other services like Tidal and Qobuz work well.
- •Input renaming is not supported on the device, which can cause some inconvenience in managing sources.
- •Plastic control knobs detract slightly from the premium feel, especially if you prefer the heft and look of metal knobs.
- •Strictly a 2-channel receiver with support only for a powered subwoofer, so it’s not suitable for multi-channel surround sound setups.
- •YPAO calibration, while useful, may slightly alter sound character, and many users prefer turning it off for a fuller natural tone.
- •Some aesthetic aspects like circular control knobs could be more appealing but are subjective.
