TLDR Review: Yamaha MX88 Synthesizer
Verdict
The Yamaha MX88 is an outstanding choice for musicians seeking a top-tier weighted 88-key synthesizer with authentic Yamaha sound and excellent build quality at a relatively accessible price point. Its sound engine and key feel rival much pricier models, making it perfect for professionals and hobbyists alike focused on performance quality. However, if you need built-in speakers, a simpler user interface, or advanced layering and sequencing functions, you might want to explore other options. Overall, the MX88 shines as a polished, powerful stage synth with classic Yamaha tones and solid hardware features.

- Top con:
- The keyboard does not have built-in speakers, requiring external amplification or headphones for sound.
Pros
- •The Yamaha MX88 offers a physically solid, weighted key action that closely mimics the feel of an acoustic piano, with smooth and natural velocity sensing.
- •It delivers exceptional sample and sound quality, with professional-level piano, electric piano, and synth patches that rival keyboards costing well over $2,000.
- •The keyboard is lightweight and portable, making it a great full 88-key replacement for stage or studio use.
- •The design is professional and attractive, giving it a high-end look without the high-end price.
- •Extensive functionality includes a performance mode with drum tracks and an arpeggiator, adding dynamic playability.

- •Compatible with external hardware like looper pedals, making it ideal for hardware-based live performance setups without needing a computer or DAW.
- •Comes with a wide variety of preset voices and many customization options to tailor sounds.
- •The keybed and sound samples are highly praised by Yamaha synth enthusiasts for their authentic tone and excellent playability.
Cons
- •The keyboard does not have built-in speakers, requiring external amplification or headphones for sound.
- •Changing voices can be awkward due to a lack of dedicated preset buttons and a somewhat cumbersome menu system that requires deep diving.
- •Some players find the weighted keys slightly too heavy and may need conditioning to get comfortable.
- •The display is outdated and not very user-friendly, lacking modern features such as a larger screen or touchscreen interface.
- •Missing features include aftertouch, a looper/sequencer, and a layer/split simultaneous mode, which limits some performance versatility.
- •A limited number of third-party patches are available, although some EDM/dance packs improve variety.
- •Some synth patches are monophonic, which restricts playing chords in those specific sounds.
- •The keyboard sits securely on an X-style stand but lacks provisions for strap or bolt security for transport.
