TLDR Review: Westinghouse 13500 Dual Fuel Generator
Verdict
If you need a *reliable, powerful, and flexible* home backup generator with dual fuel options and remote start convenience, the Westinghouse 13500 Peak Watt Dual Fuel Generator is a strong contender offering excellent value for frequent or extended outages. Just be prepared for its weight, minor setup quirks like the 50A plug fit, and attentive maintenance to keep it running smoothly. For those wanting easier electrical connections or a fully automatic system, exploring other whole-home generators might be worthwhile, but for a budget-friendly, hard-working portable option, this generator delivers the goods with style.
- Top pro:
- Starts easily using both remote fob and recoil pull starter, with a battery that comes fully charged and ready for trickle charging.
- Top con:
- The generator is heavy (about 200 lbs) and may require assistance or care when lifting, especially during wheel and foot attachment.
Pros
- •Starts easily using both remote fob and recoil pull starter, with a battery that comes fully charged and ready for trickle charging.
- •Sturdy build quality featuring heavy-duty materials, solid wheels, and a fold-down handle for easier mobility, even over rough terrain.
- •Provides plenty of power to run an entire 2400 sq ft home, including heavy appliances like electric baseboard heaters, furnace, well pump, and garage door opener.
- •Dual fuel capability (gasoline and propane) offers flexible fuel options, though propane output runs about 1000 watts lower.
- •Remote electric start is convenient, especially helpful in cold weather or during emergencies.
- •Relatively quiet operation, appreciated by neighbors, especially during early mornings.
- •Clear, printed manual with thorough instructions and important warnings makes setup and operation straightforward.
- •Quick assembly and setup, typically ready within 15-30 minutes including oil addition and fuel hookup.
- •Runs continuously for days with proper refueling; siphon pump use helps ensure spill-free gas transfer.
- •Transfer switch ready, facilitating easier connection to a home electrical panel for safer power distribution.
Cons
- •The generator is heavy (about 200 lbs) and may require assistance or care when lifting, especially during wheel and foot attachment.
- •When running on propane, power output drops by roughly 1000 watts, which means careful load management is needed.
- •The frequency runs slightly high (~63 Hz), causing some electric clocks to gain time; adjusting frequency requires some know-how.
- •The 50A outlet plug may need minor modification for proper fit, and unbonded neutral changes should be made cautiously, preferably by a qualified electrician.
- •Instruction manual lacks clear information on connecting the generator to home electrical systems via transfer switch, which can confuse first-time users.
- •Requires fresh, stabilized gasoline and proper shutdown procedures to avoid carburetor problems; warranty may not cover issues linked to old or untreated fuel.
- •Missing spare spark plug that some expected based on advertising (not a dealbreaker but worth noting).
- •Startup sometimes requires a few attempts; the auto-retry feature is handy but might be unexpected to some users.
- •Break-in period recommended at low load for about 6 hours, which is an extra step for optimal longevity.
- •Some users noted that staggered appliance startup is necessary to prevent overload, which could be inconvenient during outages.
