TLDR Review: WD_BLACK SN850X 4TB SSD
Verdict
The WD_BLACK 4TB SN850X NVMe SSD is a seriously fast and spacious drive that suits gamers and power users who want a premium, reliable storage upgrade with superb PCIe 4.0 performance in a compact format. However, if you’re budget-conscious or don’t have a Gen4-compatible system, the price and feature set might feel a bit much for what you get—especially since "Game Mode 2.0" doesn’t deliver much beyond hype. For those serious about squeezing every ounce of next-gen speed with a large capacity, this drive is a strong choice worth considering.
- Top pro:
- Offers blazing fast PCIe Gen4 speeds with up to 7,300 MB/s read and over 6,400 MB/s write, drastically cutting down game load and boot times.
- Top con:
- Uses 112-layer flash memory, which is slightly behind some competitors featuring newer technology, though firmware optimization helps offset this.
Pros
- •Offers blazing fast PCIe Gen4 speeds with up to 7,300 MB/s read and over 6,400 MB/s write, drastically cutting down game load and boot times.
- •Large 4TB capacity is excellent for gamers and content creators needing ample space for games, media, and projects.
- •Compact, single-sided M.2 2280 form factor enhances compatibility and cooling, especially in tight or portable setups.
- •Consistently reliable performance under heavy workloads without throttling, boasting solid thermal management with standard airflow or basic heatsink cooling.
- •Easy installation in any system with a PCIe Gen4 slot, and the WD Dashboard software offers user-friendly management with an optional Gaming Mode.
- •Stable and responsive performance ideal for demanding multitasking, gaming, and content creation scenarios.
Cons
- •Uses 112-layer flash memory, which is slightly behind some competitors featuring newer technology, though firmware optimization helps offset this.
- •The "Game Mode 2.0" feature is mostly a marketing angle, with little tangible benefit noticed by users in real-world use.
- •Premium price may seem steep considering other high-end SSDs offer similar or better performance at possibly lower cost.
- •Best performance demands a PCIe Gen4 motherboard and good system airflow, otherwise you won’t hit advertised speeds.
