TLDR Review: Veterinary Formula Flea and Tick Shampoo
Verdict
Veterinary Formula Flea and Tick Shampoo for Dogs and Cats is an effective, quick-acting flea and tick killer primarily suited for immediate relief rather than long-term prevention. It’s gentle enough for most dogs and easy to use, but not appropriate for cats due to safety concerns. If you’re looking for longer-lasting flea control or a product safe for cats, this may not meet your needs. For a wider, safer option or better residual protection, consider exploring other flea shampoos or treatments designed specifically for cats or with longer-lasting formulas.
- Top pro:
- Works very well at eliminating fleas and ticks quickly, often within 2 minutes of application.
- Top con:
- The shampoo does not prevent fleas from returning and requires regular reapplication; it does not last the claimed 14 days.

- •Kills ticks on contact, making them easy to remove without fuss.
- •The shampoo is gentle, produces a rich lather, and effectively cleans your pet’s coat.
- •Has a mild citrus or medicated scent that is not overpowering for most users.
- •Safe for dogs when used as directed, and helpful as a temporary treatment when combined with flea combing.
- •Easy to apply — shampooing key areas and letting it sit works best for thorough flea elimination.
- •Warm water enhances the shampoo's effectiveness by creating a suitable environment to kill fleas.
- •Wearing gloves is recommended to protect hands, as the shampoo can dry out skin.
- •Reliable and consistent enough that some users consider it their "grail" flea shampoo.
Cons
- •The shampoo does not prevent fleas from returning and requires regular reapplication; it does not last the claimed 14 days.
- •Can cause vomiting in cats and should not be used on them despite the product being marketed for both dogs and cats.
- •The prevention spray included or associated with it may be too harsh, causing hair loss or skin irritation in some dogs.
- •Spray application can be tricky since it shoots out rather than mists; best to spray into hands first for even coverage.
- •Some users report the product to have a strong, unpleasant medicated smell.
- •Not suitable for long-term flea control on pets due to limited residual activity.
- •Requires careful and thorough washing from ears to paws for best results, which some may find cumbersome.
