TLDR Review: Vertiv Liebert PSA5 700VA UPS
Verdict
The Vertiv Liebert PSA5 700VA UPS is a solid choice for small office or home users who want reliable surge protection and a decent backup window for typical electronics like PCs, routers, and gaming rigs. Its AVR technology and multiple outlet options make it versatile, while the quiet operation suits noise-sensitive setups. However, battery reliability and runtime limitations mean you should monitor the battery health closely and be prepared to replace it eventually. If your priority is protecting ongoing work from short power blips or requiring sine wave output for sensitive equipment, you might want to investigate higher-end models or brands specializing in pure sine wave UPS systems. Overall, this model balances functionality and price well, backed by a three-year warranty and good software support, but keep an eye on the battery and consider your power needs carefully before purchasing.
- Top pro:
- Provides reliable power backup and surge protection for typical office equipment, computers, routers, and mid-level gaming PCs with a 700VA/420W capacity.
- Top con:
- The simulated sine wave output may not be ideal for sensitive or high-end electronics; it’s better suited for typical office or gaming needs.
Pros
- •Provides reliable power backup and surge protection for typical office equipment, computers, routers, and mid-level gaming PCs with a 700VA/420W capacity.
- •Features Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) that stabilizes voltage fluctuations without switching to battery power unnecessarily.
- •Includes surge protection not only for power but also for coaxial cables, network cables, and phone lines, offering broader device protection.
- •User-friendly with a clear LCD display showing battery charge, input voltage, and load; also features an auto-off option to reduce distraction from glare.
- •Offers convenient front USB charging ports for mobile devices and a rear USB port for PC monitoring and UPS communication.
- •Supports PC monitoring and automatic safe shutdown via USB, with compatible software available for Mac and Windows.
- •Battery installation and replacement are straightforward, with easy front access to the battery compartment.
- •Silent operation compared to fan-cooled models, making it suitable for office and home environments where noise is a concern.
- •Power outlets are thoughtfully spaced, with a mix of battery-backed and surge-only outlets that accommodate bulky plugs and power bricks.
- •Comes with a three-year full unit replacement warranty, adding to the peace of mind for buyers.
Cons
- •The simulated sine wave output may not be ideal for sensitive or high-end electronics; it’s better suited for typical office or gaming needs.
- •Battery life under continuous use tends to be limited: typically lasting a couple of years, and backup runtime around 45-50 minutes on modest loads.
- •Reports of batteries arriving dead or losing charge quickly after replacement suggest potential reliability issues with battery quality or management.
- •No warning or proactive alert system when the battery permanently loses capacity, leading to possible unexpected shutdowns.
- •The UPS does not prevent shutdowns during brief power blips, meaning it may not fully protect against loss of unsaved work.
- •Charging times can feel longer than expected, which may frustrate users needing quick power restoration.
- •The monitoring software requires creating an online account, which some users might find inconvenient or intrusive.
- •While the LCD and controls are easy to use, the battery compartment access isn’t immediately obvious and may require some initial fumbling.
