TLDR Review: Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Combo
Verdict
The Ugly Stik USSP602M30CBO GX2 Spinning Fishing Reel and Rod Combo is a tough, dependable choice for beginners or anglers needing a rugged rod that can withstand harsh conditions and handle a variety of fish species. However, the included reel’s quality and durability leave something to be desired, often prompting users to replace it earlier than expected. If you want a combo that prioritizes reel performance or sensitivity for finesse fishing, it’s worth considering purchasing the rod separately and upgrading your reel. Overall, it’s a *solid value* and versatile rod, especially if you’re after strength over delicacy. If reel durability and smoother operation are a priority, you might want to explore combos with higher-end reels or consider pairing this rod with a separate, premium-quality spinning reel.

- •Extremely durable and strong, capable of handling heavy use, including rough environments like sand, dirt, freshwater, and brackish water
- •Medium/heavy power with fast action, making it ideal for bass fishing and various species such as perch, catfish, rockbass, bluegill, black drum, and sheepshead
- •The rod offers a strong backbone and toughness, making it suitable for handling very large and powerful fish without breaking
- •Performs well with various baits including crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and worms

- •Good sensitivity once you get used to the timing for setting the hook
- •Comes with a soft canvas case with a reel pocket for convenient storage and transport
- •Versatile for multiple fishing situations and species, praised for its proven design and strength
Cons
- •The reel is often described as low quality, with durability issues including the handle detaching due to a loose pin
- •Reel quality is inconsistent and may require replacement sooner than expected
- •The combo can be quite heavy and not lightweight, which may cause shoulder fatigue, especially with the included 40 size reel
- •Alignment issues between the rod butt and reel in some units make reeling difficult, even with lighter fish (around 5 pounds)
- •The rod is not very sensitive, making it less suitable for detecting subtle bites or finesse techniques like Texas rigged plastics
- •Some users find the rod poorly made with low-quality materials, advising against purchase for serious anglers
- •Not ideal for finesse rigs and light presentation where sensitivity is crucial
- •The reel is adequate mainly for beginners and may not satisfy more experienced anglers looking for smoothness and durability
- •The combo feels slightly long for sit-inside kayaks, limiting its use in that specific fishing scenario
- •For better performance, many recommend buying the rod alone and pairing it with a higher quality reel
