TLDR Review: TurboTax Deluxe 2025
Verdict
TurboTax Deluxe Desktop Edition 2025 is a solid, trusted choice for taxpayers who want an economical, guided, and mostly hassle-free way to file federal and state taxes on Windows 11 or Mac 14. It's especially good for those comfortable with basic tax research and who prefer the control and offline security of a desktop app. However, if you want a completely smooth e-filing experience or have an older Windows 10 system, be aware of potential installation and filing frustrations. If you find yourself frustrated with e-file errors or poor customer support, you might want to consider other tax software alternatives that offer more reliable online filing and better support.
- Top pro:
- Easy and economical for average taxpayers with W-2s and some 1099s, making it suitable for most straightforward tax situations.
- Top con:
- Downloading and installing the software on Windows 11 can be time-consuming and sometimes problematic.
Pros
- •Easy and economical for average taxpayers with W-2s and some 1099s, making it suitable for most straightforward tax situations.
- •Step-by-step guidance through the tax preparation process helps reduce mistakes and confusion.
- •Automatically transfers data from last year's returns, speeding up the filing process for returning users.
- •Desktop version allows offline use and better organization of tax files by year for easy access and backup.
- •Trusted software with a long history dating back to the 1980s, offering reliability and familiarity.
- •IRS notifications of small errors directly through the software help avoid in-person visits or scams.
- •User-friendly interface streamlines filing, especially for those who have used TurboTax over multiple years.
- •Generally more cost-effective than paying a tax accountant, with a lower chance of audits reported by long-term users.
- •Compatible with Windows 11 and Mac 14, with direct download from brokers and banks to import 1099 data easily.
Cons
- •Downloading and installing the software on Windows 11 can be time-consuming and sometimes problematic.
- •E-filing occasionally produces errors related to previous filings that do not match IRS records, forcing manual form printing and mailing.
- •The online version is prone to errors that prevent submission, even when previous year data exists, causing frustration.
- •Switching between online and desktop versions can lead to duplicate fees and confusion over filing status.
- •Customer service is difficult to reach, and refund processes are complicated, often requiring disabling the software.
- •Some users report significant long-term frustration with errors and support, considering abandoning TurboTax altogether.
- •Not compatible with Windows 10, so users on older operating systems must upgrade to Windows 11.
- •Despite good guidance, users sometimes need to do additional tax research to maximize deductions and minimize tax liability.
- •Filing state taxes usually incurs an additional fee, even when federal filing is free.
- •The software automatically applies a tax penalty if you owe more than $1,000, which can be tough on retirees depending on IRA income.
