TLDR Review: TP-Link Tapo P306 Smart Plug Extender
Verdict
The TP-Link Tapo P306 is a smart plug outlet extender that packs a lot of value into one compact device—offering multiple smart outlets, USB fast charging, a built-in night light, and broad smart home compatibility. It’s ideal for users wanting to control several devices in one spot with automation flexibility and solid integration with Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant. However, if you are looking for a surge protector with stronger protection and visual status indicators or want more control over night light and USB manual overrides, you might wish to explore alternative models with advanced surge features. For most users, though, this device strikes a great balance between functionality, ease of use, and price.
- Top pro:
- Features three individually controllable smart outlets, plus three always-on outlets and three independently controllable USB ports (1 USB-C and 2 USB-A) for versatile device management.
- Top con:
- Surge protection rating is limited to 205 joules and lacks an indicator to alert users if the protection has been compromised.

Cons
- •Surge protection rating is limited to 205 joules and lacks an indicator to alert users if the protection has been compromised.
- •Night light LEDs can be intrusive in dark rooms as they do not turn off completely, and their brightness cannot be dimmed based on ambient light.
- •Night light activation cannot be directly manually controlled on the device itself; control requires the smart home app or triggers.
- •Manual override switches exist only for the smart outlets; USB ports and night light must be controlled solely through the app.
- •Some users find that bulky power bricks may still block adjacent outlets despite symmetrical spacing.
- •The USB ports, while fast charging, are not suitable for high-power devices like USB-C laptops.
- •Because of the device’s weight, secure mounting is recommended to avoid it pulling out of the wall outlet.
- •Bright white indicator LEDs for outlets and USB ports may be distracting in a dark environment and currently have no dimming option.
- •Tightening the neutral stabilizer during installation can require pliers, which might be a small nuisance for some users.
