TLDR Review: TheraGun Pro Plus
Verdict
The Theragun Pro Plus is a powerhouse percussion massager designed for athletes and serious muscle recovery enthusiasts who want top-tier performance with advanced features like infrared light therapy, multiple targeted attachments, and seamless app integration. Its weight and powerful intensity make it less ideal for casual or lightweight use, and some software quirks (especially with the app and auto start) could irritate tech-savvy users. If you want the absolute best in professional-grade muscle therapy and don’t mind investing time in learning the device, this is an excellent choice. However, if you’re looking for something lighter, simpler, or with a more refined app experience, exploring other Theragun models or similar competitors might be worthwhile.
- Top pro:
- Provides powerful percussive therapy with up to 16mm amplitude, delivering deep muscle relief, especially effective for upper back, neck, quads, and glutes.
- Top con:
- The device is relatively heavy, making it challenging to hold for extended solo use or when reaching difficult areas without assistance.
Pros
- •Provides powerful percussive therapy with up to 16mm amplitude, delivering deep muscle relief, especially effective for upper back, neck, quads, and glutes.
- •Includes a versatile set of attachments (heat, vibration, micro-point, thumb, dampener, wedge, and standard ball) that cover a wide range of muscle recovery needs and targeted therapy.
- •Integrated near-infrared LED therapy and hot/cold treatment (though cold therapy has some limitations) add a holistic approach to muscle wellness beyond percussion.
- •Ergonomic design with bulky, well-angled handles makes it easier to reach hard-to-access sore spots and use its weight advantageously for better muscle relief.
- •The LCD display is bright and intuitive, showing speed, modes, and attachment recognition, which automatically customizes settings like heat and vibration intensity.
- •Long-lasting battery life supports days of use without recharge, and USB-C charging is convenient and universal.
- •The companion Therabody app offers multiple preset routines for recovery, pain relief, warm-up, cooldown, meditation, and even sleep prep, enhancing the overall experience.
- •Motor runs smoothly and quietly, even under strong pressure, with a high stall force that allows deep massage without shutting down.
- •Attachments securely twist and lock in place, preventing accidental detachment during vigorous use.
- •High build quality and superior performance compared to many competitors, making it a worthy investment for serious recovery.
Cons
- •The device is relatively heavy, making it challenging to hold for extended solo use or when reaching difficult areas without assistance.
- •The auto start feature is annoying; the device begins immediately upon power on, which can be frustrating if you want to configure presets first.
- •The app, while useful, feels underutilized and somewhat basic—lacks deeper personalization and more robust preset management.
- •The LCD screen is prone to scratching easily, impacting the premium feel.
- •LED light therapy defaults to on during use, which can be distracting or uncomfortable, especially when working sensitive areas like the neck.
- •Some specialized features like the heart rate monitor and red light therapy are either underwhelming or feel unnecessary for many users.
- •The cold therapy attachment is not fully effective—it vents hot air and cannot be used simultaneously with percussion, reducing its utility.
- •Intensity levels can be very strong and may require careful adjustment, particularly for beginners who are used to gentler vibrating massagers.
- •Durability concerns exist; some users have reported units failing after about a year, despite willingness to repurchase due to performance.
- •The device’s advanced features and price point might be overkill for casual users looking for simple muscle relief.
