TLDR Review: The Sun and the Star
Verdict
This book seems like a mixed bag. While adored by fans of Riordan and celebrated for its inclusion and familiar settings, it might not captivate everyone like its predecessors. Before diving in, consider if you're up for a bit of agenda or if you're simply in it for the love of Percy Jackson. Maybe give the blurb a read to see if it tickles your fancy.
- Top pro:
- Highly recommended for fans of the author and for those who have enjoyed other Percy Jackson books, making it a comfortable dive back into a familiar world.
- Top con:
- Lacks the page-turning feel of Riordan's prior works, so you might not want to cancel your weekend plans for this one.
Score
"From the World of Percy Jackson: The Sun and the Star" achieves a moderate score as it presents a heartfelt exploration of LGBTQ themes and deeper character relationships, particularly between Nico and Will, which resonate strongly with some readers. However, many critiques highlight issues with pacing, convoluted storytelling, and a sense of disconnect from the traditional action-driven narratives typical of the Percy Jackson universe. This duality in reception reflects both appreciation for its emotional depth and disappointment with its execution.

- •The inclusion of LGBTQ+ content and representation is celebrated, making it a progressive addition to the Percy Jackson world.
Cons
- •Lacks the page-turning feel of Riordan's prior works, so you might not want to cancel your weekend plans for this one.
- •Agenda pushing, particularly regarding gender and quotes like 'that's such archaic thinking' may ruffle some feathers - not everyone's cup of tea.
- •While a solid addition to the Percy Jackson universe, it does not meet the high expectations set by previous experiences, leaving some fans wanting.
- •Although the book is recommended for nearly everyone, the clear promotion of certain views may not appeal to all readers.
