TLDR Review: TCL 98-Inch S5 4K TV
Verdict
If you're after a massive 98-inch TV that delivers stunning picture quality, smooth smart features, and excellent value for its price, the TCL 98-Inch Class S5 4K Smart TV is a strong contender. It’s a great choice for big-room home theaters, gaming, and streaming enthusiasts who don't want to break the bank on premium QLED models. Just be prepared for a hefty installation and consider pairing it with a good sound system to unlock its full audio potential. For those who want a slightly sharper image or a lighter design, keep an eye on high-end QLED alternatives, but this TCL model balances size, performance, and cost impressively well for 2024.
- Top pro:
- Delivers an impressive, vibrant, and clear 4K picture that stands out even at the huge 98-inch size.
- Top con:
- The TV is very heavy and bulky, requiring careful handling and two or more people to install or mount securely.
Pros
- •Delivers an impressive, vibrant, and clear 4K picture that stands out even at the huge 98-inch size.
- •The built-in Google TV is smooth, user-friendly, and grants effortless access to all major streaming apps and live TV.
- •Offers excellent value given its size and picture quality, comparable to more expensive high-end 82" TVs.
- •Compatible with multiple voice assistants including Google Assistant and Alexa, enhancing smart home integration.
- •Setup is relatively straightforward (though requires two strong people for handling due to size and weight).
- •Picture customization options, especially turning off intelligent brightness and using Sports mode, improve the viewing experience.
- •Equipped with Dolby Vision, HDR Ultra, and Dolby Atmos for enhanced visual and audio quality.
- •The TV’s brightness and clarity make it suitable for gaming and even use as a large computer monitor.
- •Overall size and screen presence are perfect for creating a home theater vibe in a large room.
- •The TV supports external sound systems well, especially through HDMI ARC or optical cables, for upgraded audio.
Cons
- •The TV is very heavy and bulky, requiring careful handling and two or more people to install or mount securely.
- •Internal speakers, while loud, are best supplemented with an external surround sound system for optimal audio experience.
- •Setup and fine-tuning of picture settings can be time-consuming but are necessary to get the best out of the display.
- •The wide feet design may not fit all TV stands, possibly necessitating separate leg purchases.
- •Some users rated the TV poorly, describing extremely disappointing or frustrating experiences, though these are a minority.
- •Picture sharpness, while excellent, is not quite on par with some premium QLED models—though it offers great value for the difference.
- •The TV’s thickness is affected by a rear woofer, making it less sleek than competing ultra-thin models.
- •Not designed to withstand rough use or impact (e.g., not suitable where physical durability is critical).
