TLDR Review: Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Nintendo Switch)
Verdict
Super Mario 3D All-Stars delivers a nostalgic trip for Mario fans, bundling three beloved games despite lacking substantial enhancements. While Mario Galaxy shines brightly with its excellent polish, the absence of updates for Mario 64 and Sunshine might disappoint some. Nonetheless, it’s a must-have collector's piece and ideal for anyone looking to relive or discover Mario’s iconic 3D adventures.
- Top pro:
- Exceptional nostalgic experience for fans of classic Mario games, with updated graphics that maintain the original charm.
- Top con:
- Minimal graphical improvements, primarily just resolution enhancements, especially for Mario Sunshine.
Pros
- •Exceptional nostalgic experience for fans of classic Mario games, with updated graphics that maintain the original charm.
- •Offers excellent value by including three iconic Mario titles: Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy.
- •Plays beautifully in both docked and handheld modes on the Nintendo Switch.
- •Compatible with modern consoles, providing accessibility to new and seasoned gamers alike.
- •Super Mario Galaxy is a standout title with outstanding visual quality at 60 frames per second and support for Pro controllers.
- •Considered a collectible item due to its discontinued status, making it a desirable purchase for collectors.
- •Inclusive of the soundtracks from all three games, adding to the nostalgic enjoyment.
Cons
- •Minimal graphical improvements, primarily just resolution enhancements, especially for Mario Sunshine.
- •The collection lacks quality-of-life updates; Super Mario 64 retains its original 4:3 ratio without widescreen support.
- •Mario Sunshine has remapped controls without an option to revert to the original settings and does not support GameCube controllers.
- •Mario Sunshine and Mario 64 both run at 30fps, limiting their potential given the hardware capabilities.
- •The game's emulations retain bugs and glitches from previous versions without significant efforts to correct them.
- •Comparisons to better-treated Nintendo re-releases like Zelda: Wind Waker HD lead to disappointment.
