TLDR Review: Sony Xperia 1 III
Verdict
The Sony Xperia 1 III offers an exceptional multimedia experience with a stunning 4K HDR OLED display, top-tier camera capabilities, and niche features like expandable storage and a headphone jack that appeal to media enthusiasts and tech-savvy users. However, its high price, niche focus, and some minor battery and software quirks mean it’s best suited for those who prioritize media, photography, and customization over mainstream simplicity. If you're seeking a more traditional flagship without the emphasis on manual controls and niche features, other options like the Galaxy S23 Ultra might serve you better.
- Top pro:
- Features a stunning 6.5” 4K HDR OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, perfect for media bingeing and gaming.
- Top con:
- Camera auto mode still needs refinement, and some users may find manual controls a bit complicated initially.
Pros
- •Features a stunning 6.5” 4K HDR OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate, perfect for media bingeing and gaming.
- •Camera system with Real-time autofocus, four focal lengths, and up to 20fps continuous capture, appealing for photography enthusiasts.
- •Excellent multimedia performance with top-tier speakers delivering loud, clear, and bass-rich audio.
- •Powerful performance courtesy of Snapdragon 888 and 12GB RAM, handling demanding apps and multitasking smoothly.
- •Supports expandable storage via microSD card up to 1TB, a rare feature in flagship smartphones.
- •Maintains a near stock Android experience with useful Sony customizations like Side Sense and multi-window support.
- •Includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, catering to audiophiles and those who prefer wired audio.
- •Recognized for good build quality with a stylish design, robust hardware, and official warranty.
- •Capable of 4K/120fps video recording with professional editing options via Cinema Pro app.
- •Continues to perform well over time, with software smoothness, solid battery management, and helpful customer support.
Cons
- •Camera auto mode still needs refinement, and some users may find manual controls a bit complicated initially.
- •Battery size could be larger; some reviews mention it lasting only about a day under heavy use.
- •The software interface feels sparse or minimalist to some, lacking more personalized or feature-rich options.
- •Premium price at $1,860.99 makes it a significant investment, which might be overkill for casual users.
- •Niche design and features primarily appeal to media and camera enthusiasts, not the average consumer.
- •The phone's size and weight may feel bulky for those who prefer more compact devices.
- •Some users mention that although powerful, it doesn't replace a dedicated camera for serious photography.
- •Slightly less mainstream appeal due to design choices focusing on multimedia over all-around usability.
- •Despite the high performance, the software may still lag behind more user-friendly interfaces of competitors.
