TLDR Review: Sony 65" OLED 4K TV (2024)
Verdict
The Sony 65 Inch OLED BRAVIA 8 K-65XR80 combines exceptional OLED picture quality, immersive audio, and a slick Google TV smart platform that delivers a premium viewing and gaming experience, especially for PlayStation 5 owners. However, if you’re sensitive to sound dropouts or want less reliance on Google’s ecosystem, this model might feel a bit restrictive. For an alternative with similar premium OLED quality but potentially fewer smart OS issues, you might want to explore other Sony OLED models or compare to LG’s CX or C3 OLED lines known for their balanced smart features and sound performance.
- Top pro:
- Stunning OLED display delivers incredibly deep blacks, vibrant colors, and impressive brightness, making every scene pop with lifelike detail and contrast.
- Top con:
- The built-in Google operating system can suffer frequent sound dropouts, particularly during streaming on apps like Netflix, which is a commonly reported frustration.

- •Superior built-in sound system that often negates the immediate need for an external soundbar, providing clear and immersive audio.
- •Highly customizable picture settings for each HDMI input, allowing fine-tuning of brightness, contrast, color, and temperature to suit specific content or devices like the PlayStation 5.
- •Dolby Vision HDR significantly enhances streaming content with better highlights and dynamic range.
- •Smooth motion handling with minimal to no blur during fast-action scenes enhances the overall viewing experience.
- •Fast and intuitive Google TV interface offers seamless voice control and personalized content recommendations across popular streaming platforms.
- •Sleek, modern design fits elegantly into most living spaces without being bulky.
- •Quick and easy setup process that can be completed in under 10 minutes, including a straightforward Google account integration.
- •The TV is surprisingly lightweight compared to other premium OLED models, easing installation and wall mounting.
Cons
- •The built-in Google operating system can suffer frequent sound dropouts, particularly during streaming on apps like Netflix, which is a commonly reported frustration.
- •Inconsistent cable set-top box control makes switching channels or sources less reliable.
- •The TV does not remember favorite channels for over-the-air broadcasts, reverting to a full channel list each time it powers on.
- •Heavy reliance on Google for all smart functionalities, including picture and sound settings, limits flexibility and raises privacy concerns due to required data agreements.
- •No option to use the TV strictly as a display without Google’s OS, which may disappoint users seeking a more traditional or offline TV experience.
- •Initial minor brightness discrepancies between different broadcast standards were reported but appeared to resolve after a few days.
- •Sound quality, while good, may still benefit from an external surround sound system for audiophiles or home theater enthusiasts.
