TLDR Review: Shokz OpenFit Air Earbuds
Verdict
The SHOKZ OpenFit Air earbuds excel as durable, lightweight, and comfortable open-ear headphones designed for active users who want safety and convenience without sacrificing decent sound quality. Their standout features are the secure fit, long battery life, and ambient noise awareness, making them perfect for workouts and outdoor use. However, if you want premium audio fidelity or noise isolation, these aren’t the earbuds for you. For a similarly comfortable but potentially more versatile option, you might consider other bone conduction models or even compare with traditional wireless earbuds depending on your priorities.
- Top pro:
- Sound quality is noticeably improved over previous SHOKZ models like the Aeropex, delivering good clarity and decent bass for open-ear bone conduction headphones.
- Top con:
- Volume can sometimes be inconsistent depending on the audio source or device used.
Pros
- •Sound quality is noticeably improved over previous SHOKZ models like the Aeropex, delivering good clarity and decent bass for open-ear bone conduction headphones.
- •Extremely comfortable design that fits securely without blocking the ear canal, making them ideal for long wear and wearing with glasses.
- •The open-ear format allows ambient noise awareness, increasing safety during outdoor activities like running or cycling.
- •Lightweight and less bulky than older models, reducing fatigue during extended use.
- •Seamless and automatic Bluetooth pairing, similar to AirPods, improves ease of use.
- •Sweat and water resistance rated at IP54, suitable for intense workouts and outdoor use.
- •Excellent battery life lasting multiple days or weeks depending on usage, supporting long sessions without frequent recharging.
- •Controls are responsive and simple, though limited in number of functions.
- •Secure earhooks keep earbuds firmly in place during vigorous movement or exercise.
- •Good microphone quality for calls and voice clarity.
Cons
- •Volume can sometimes be inconsistent depending on the audio source or device used.
- •Some users find the control scheme unintuitive, with volume and other functions requiring a manual to fully understand.
- •Lack of a manual power-off button means the earbuds only turn off when placed back in the charging case or after Bluetooth disconnects and idle time.
- •Occasionally, audio issues such as switching from stereo to mono occur with certain devices like some Firestick models.
- •Open-ear design may struggle in very noisy environments, necessitating higher volume levels which can impact sound quality perception.
- •Sound quality is inherently limited by bone conduction technology and not meant to compete with traditional in-ear headphones for audiophiles.
- •User experience with sound quality varies depending on individual ear shape and fit, so trying before buying can be important.
