TLDR Review: Seagate Expansion 28TB External Hard Drive
Verdict
If you need massive, cost-effective external storage with straightforward plug-and-play use and Rescue Data Recovery Services for backup security, the Seagate Expansion 28TB External Hard Drive is a solid choice. Just keep in mind it leans on USB 3.0 speeds and mechanical drive reliability, which means it's best suited for backups and general storage rather than blazing-fast performance or critical data archiving. If USB-C or consistently higher reliability is a priority, you might want to consider other external SSD options, but for sheer capacity at the right price, this drive is tough to beat.
- Top pro:
- Works flawlessly right out of the box with quick, plug-and-play setup.
- Top con:
- Transitioning between Windows 10 and Windows 11 can cause folder recognition issues when transferring files, requiring workarounds like creating folders in Windows 11 first.
Pros
- •Works flawlessly right out of the box with quick, plug-and-play setup.
- •Provides solid and consistent transfer speeds suitable for large files and backups, averaging around 460 MB/s read and 390 MB/s write speeds.
- •Quiet operation overall, with only a faint hum during heavy use and stable temperature management thanks to ventilation in the enclosure.
- •Sturdy, well-made build with secure ports, solid casing, and a compact design that fits easily on a desk or shelf.
- •Huge 28TB capacity, ideal for extensive storage needs including backups, media, and games without performance drops at high fill levels.
- •Includes Rescue Data Recovery Services for peace of mind in case of accidental data loss.
- •Reliable and straightforward with no unnecessary features, perfect for users wanting dependable daily use storage.
- •Compatible with both direct connections and networked setups and recommended for NAS use if you’re comfortable removing the drive from its enclosure.
- •Power adapter includes multiple plugs for worldwide compatibility.
Cons
- •Transitioning between Windows 10 and Windows 11 can cause folder recognition issues when transferring files, requiring workarounds like creating folders in Windows 11 first.
- •Speed is limited by the USB 3.0 interface and the inherent mechanical drive characteristics, so it won't match the faster speeds of SSDs or USB-C drives.
- •Reliability is somewhat inconsistent; some users report early drive failures while others enjoy years of use, making it less ideal for irreplaceable or highly sensitive data.
- •Uses USB-A 3.0 port, lacking newer USB-C support, which might be limiting for users wanting the latest connectivity standards.
- •Although mostly quiet, occasional noise can be noticeable, making it less suited for ultra-quiet environments.
- •The included USB cable is sometimes recommended to be replaced for better reliability.
- •Removing the drive to use internally could void the warranty and requires care to avoid damaging the enclosure.
