TLDR Review: Samsung SSD 9100 PRO 4TB
Verdict
The Samsung SSD 9100 PRO 4TB is a beast built for serious users demanding top-tier PCIe 5.0 speeds, massive capacity, and reliable cooling for AI computing, gaming, and heavy workstation tasks. However, to truly unleash its mind-blowing 14,800MB/s potential, you’ll need a modern motherboard and a powerful CPU—otherwise, you’re leaving speed on the table. If you want to guarantee the fastest experience with proper support for PCIe 5.0, ensure your system is up to date. This drive is absolutely worth it if you want future-proof storage and blazing-fast performance today and tomorrow.
- Top pro:
- Delivers consistently impressive high speeds, maintaining performance even when sharing PCIe lanes with other components.
- Top con:
- Performance is heavily dependent on the motherboard; older boards like the Z170M limit speeds to around 3,500MB/s, far below the SSD’s potential.
Pros
- •Delivers consistently impressive high speeds, maintaining performance even when sharing PCIe lanes with other components.
- •Built tough with a sturdy heat spreader and durable PCB designed to handle heavy use and longevity.
- •Generous 4TB capacity, perfect for large gaming libraries, video projects, and backups without performance dips.
- •Utilizes the cutting-edge PCIe 5.0x4 interface, making it future-proof for upcoming technology demands.
- •Significantly faster boot times and application performance, such as Visual Studio compiling projects in under a minute.
- •Achieves real-world read/write speeds close to 13,000MB/s, near the advertised peak of 14,800MB/s.
- •Runs cool under heavy loads (~45°C) with proper system cooling, outperforming previous generations in thermal efficiency.
- •Extremely fast transfer rates, e.g., moving 1.2TB of data from a PS5Pro in about 4 minutes.
- •Twice as fast, cooler, and more power-efficient compared to older Samsung SSD models.
- •Recognized reliably by Samsung Magician software, confirming its authenticity and supported features.
Cons
- •Performance is heavily dependent on the motherboard; older boards like the Z170M limit speeds to around 3,500MB/s, far below the SSD’s potential.
- •Installation, especially in systems like PS5Pro, requires careful attention and multiple steps which may be tricky without proper guides or videos.
- •Sequential speeds may fall a bit short of the peak 14,800MB/s figure depending on the CPU and system configuration used.
- •Some users reported personal data privacy issues unrelated to the product but tied to the shipping carrier, leading to attempted scams (important to keep in mind but not a product flaw).
