TLDR Review: Samsung Odyssey G90XF Monitor
Verdict
If you're a die-hard enthusiast for glasses-free 3D gaming and have the powerful PC to back it up (think RTX 3080+ and top-tier CPU), the Samsung 27-inch Odyssey 3D G90XF offers a unique, immersive experience unmatched in the market right now. However, if your gaming library or 3D workflow is limited, or you’re more interested in conventional high-refresh-rate 4K gaming, the 3D features may feel like a party trick rather than a game-changer. The sleek design, excellent 4K display, and smooth 165Hz performance still make it a great all-around gaming and creative monitor—just go in with tempered expectations on the 3D front. For those seeking more standard high-end gaming without the 3D gimmicks, it’s worth keeping an eye on upcoming releases or slightly cheaper alternatives focusing on refresh rate and color accuracy.
- Top pro:
- Delivers an impressive and immersive glasses-free 3D experience with excellent pop-out visuals that significantly enhance gameplay.
- Top con:
- The 3D feature currently supports only a limited number of games, restricting broader usability for 3D enthusiasts.
Pros
- •Delivers an impressive and immersive glasses-free 3D experience with excellent pop-out visuals that significantly enhance gameplay.
- •Stunning 4K display with vibrant colors, sharp resolution, and a silky-smooth 165Hz refresh rate paired with a 1ms response time.
- •Excellent color accuracy and brightness, making it suitable not only for gaming but also for creative work like photo and video editing.
- •Ideal 27-inch size that strikes a good balance between ample screen space and desktop usability.
- •Built-in dual directional speakers add enriched audio, supporting the 3D video experience without needing external sound devices.
- •Edge Lighting enhances immersion by matching ambient colors on the bottom of the monitor, adding a subtle but appealing touch.
- •Uses eye-tracking technology and view mapping algorithms to maintain 3D perspective even if you're off-center, reducing the need to stay perfectly static.
- •Samsung’s reputation for high-quality displays is maintained with this model's vibrant and sharp visuals.
- •Future firmware updates are expected, with plans to expand 3D game compatibility to about 50 titles by the end of 2025.
Cons
- •The 3D feature currently supports only a limited number of games, restricting broader usability for 3D enthusiasts.
- •3D Blu-ray playback is not supported directly on the monitor, and true 3D stereoscopic conversion for 2D content is either ineffective or absent.
- •Attempts to convert 2D content to 3D often result in a double or unmerged image, leading to disappointment among users expecting full conversion.
- •3D mode activation is automatic and locked behind proprietary software (Odyssey 3D Hub); users cannot toggle 3D mode manually, limiting flexibility.
- •Side-by-side (SBS) 3D images don’t reliably trigger the 3D effect, making professional 3D work or certain content less convenient.
- •Some software limitations exist because Samsung and LeiaSR have restricted SDK access, limiting the development of innovative 3D apps.
- •The glossy IPS panel, while offering great image quality, can cause distracting reflections or glare in bright environments.
- •The Edge Lighting effect, though visually appealing, can lag during fast-paced gaming and may prompt users to disable it.
- •Higher price point largely hinges on the 3D feature, which some users find gimmicky or rarely useful due to limited compatibility.
- •The black background can shift to a half-gray tint with mouse movement in 3D mode, which is an annoying and distracting visual artifact.
