TLDR Review: Samsung 990 PRO SSD 2TB
Verdict
The **SAMSUNG 990 PRO SSD 2TB NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen4** is a powerhouse for anyone looking to dramatically boost computing, gaming, or creative workloads with blistering speeds and solid reliability. Its included heatsink and top-notch Samsung software make installation and optimization painless. That said, if hardware encryption is a must-have or if you want guaranteed peak performance without occasional thermal or speed fluctuations, you might want to compare it to the **SK Hynix P41** drive. For gamers and PC enthusiasts with PCIe 4.0 systems wanting excellent real-world speed and very low latency, this SSD remains a top-tier choice.
- Top pro:
- Blazing fast and reliable performance with up to 7,450 MB/s sequential read speeds, perfect for high-end computing, gaming, and heavy workloads.
- Top con:
- May not always reach the advertised peak read/write speeds in real-world use; some users report fluctuating or lower than expected performance.
Pros
- •Blazing fast and reliable performance with up to 7,450 MB/s sequential read speeds, perfect for high-end computing, gaming, and heavy workloads.
- •Significant improvement in system boot times, file transfers, and overall responsiveness compared to older drives.
- •Easy NVMe M.2 installation coupled with user-friendly Samsung Magician software that simplifies data migration, performance optimization, and drive health monitoring.
- •Comes with an angular heatsink featuring customizable RGB LEDs, providing effective cooling that helps maintain peak speeds during intense use.
- •Impressively low latency and high IOPS ratings, giving a smooth experience for gaming and media editing.
- •Durable and long-lasting with a 5-year limited warranty and endurance rating of 1200 TBW.
- •Consistent and stable performance in various gaming scenarios, including seamless compatibility with PS5.
- •Outperforms many competitors in real-world benchmarks, particularly for users with PCIe 4.0 capable systems.
Cons
- •May not always reach the advertised peak read/write speeds in real-world use; some users report fluctuating or lower than expected performance.
- •Initial units have caused blue screens of death (BSOD) for some early adopters, though replacements generally resolve these issues.
- •Removing the heatsink voids the warranty and requires specialized tools, which can be inconvenient if users want a slimmer build.
- •Hardware encryption support is problematic—several users report failing Bitlocker and no firmware fixes are currently available, making it unsuitable for those depending on native hardware encryption.
- •Performance can degrade or fluctuate especially as space fills up on the drive.
- •Can get quite hot during extended file transfers or heavy workloads, even with the heatsink in place.
- •SK Hynix P41 SSD offers comparable or better performance with potentially longer lifespan, making it a worthy alternative to consider, especially if encryption or endurance is a priority.
- •Comes with a heatsink that may not fit in all device enclosures without modifications.
