TLDR Review: Samsung 870 EVO 1TB SSD
Verdict
The SAMSUNG 870 EVO SATA III SSD 1TB is an excellent pick if you want to breathe new life into an older PC or laptop without breaking the bank on NVMe upgrades that may not be supported by your hardware. It delivers solid, dependable performance, rated endurance, and seamless compatibility in a reliable package—all wrapped up with Samsung’s trusted warranty and software support. If you’re looking for a SATA SSD that balances speed, capacity, and longevity for everyday use, this drive is a smart buy. However, if you prioritize blazing-fast NVMe speeds and your device supports it, consider looking into M.2 NVMe drives for a bigger performance leap.
- Top pro:
- Significantly faster boot times and software access compared to traditional HDDs, giving older PCs and laptops a noticeable speed boost.
- Top con:
- Price is somewhat higher than some other 1TB SATA SSD options, reflecting the premium Samsung brand and features.
Pros
- •Significantly faster boot times and software access compared to traditional HDDs, giving older PCs and laptops a noticeable speed boost.
- •Reliable and consistent performance with read speeds up to 560 MB/s and write speeds around 530 MB/s, often meeting or exceeding these numbers with Samsung Magician software.
- •Compatible with a wide range of devices, especially older laptops that don't support NVMe drives or lack M.2 slots.
- •Energy-efficient operation runs cool and uses low power, helping to extend laptop battery life.
- •Easy installation process, suitable for users new to hardware upgrades; Samsung’s migration software makes data transfer from old drives straightforward.
- •Comes with Samsung Magician software that offers a helpful dashboard for performance monitoring and lifespan tracking.
- •Highly durable with a 5-year warranty and a high endurance rating of 600 TB written, backed by Samsung’s reputable quality.
- •Quiet operation producing no noise or heat, fitting perfectly into standard 2.5" drive bays.
- •Considered a great value for its balance of speed, capacity, and reliability compared to competing SATA SSDs.
- •Enhances performance enough to "transform" old laptops into nearly new-feeling machines, suitable even for moderate creative workloads like video editing and audio production.
Cons
- •Price is somewhat higher than some other 1TB SATA SSD options, reflecting the premium Samsung brand and features.
- •Some users experienced initial BIOS recognition issues or difficulty booting from the drive, which can require BIOS tweaking or troubleshooting.
- •Not as fast as NVMe SSDs, so this isn't the best choice if you want top-of-the-line speed and your system supports M.2 NVMe.
- •A few reviews note limited or partial support in Samsung Magician software when used with non-Samsung drives or certain older systems.
- •The installation manual and general instructions may be lacking in detail for absolute beginners.
- •A small number of users reported early drive failures or performance degradation within a year, though these cases appear rare.
