TLDR Review: Ring Smart Spotlight
Verdict
The Ring Smart Lighting Spotlight is a solid choice if you want good brightness and easy Alexa integration without the hassle of an additional bridge (if your Alexa device has Zigbee). It excels in simple installation and flexible control but stumbles on motion sensor reliability and battery life consistency. If you need more dependable motion detection or integrated video alerts, you might want to consider complementary or alternative security lighting solutions with cameras or more advanced sensors. Overall, this product suits users invested in the Ring ecosystem who value easy setup and solid illumination but can tolerate some quirks in motion sensing and app performance.
- Top pro:
- Integrates seamlessly with Alexa and works well with Zigbee-enabled Alexa devices without needing an additional bridge.
- Top con:
- Motion sensors are inconsistent, with frequent false alerts triggered by shadows or other causes leading to annoying notifications.
Pros
- •Integrates seamlessly with Alexa and works well with Zigbee-enabled Alexa devices without needing an additional bridge.
- •Easy to install and connect, even on tough surfaces like concrete, with straightforward setup and quick pairing.
- •Motion sensors trigger the lights automatically and allow control over light duration via the app or Alexa routines, unlike competitors with fixed times.
- •Brighter than many similar models, reportedly twice as bright compared to products like the Beams MB360XT.
- •Uses 4 D batteries that last several months under normal use, providing good value for brightness and performance.
- •The lights can be controlled by multiple methods including time schedules, voice commands, app control, and Ring doorbell motion sensors.
- •Replacement units improved battery life and reduced activation during daylight, as confirmed by Ring support efforts.
- •Works reliably in typical conditions, especially appreciated during darker months for early evening security lighting.
Cons
- •Motion sensors are inconsistent, with frequent false alerts triggered by shadows or other causes leading to annoying notifications.
- •Sometimes the lights fail to activate at night when motion is detected, indicating less sensitive or unreliable detection range (under 12 ft at night).
- •Battery life can vary greatly with many users experiencing frequent replacements needed every few weeks despite claims of longer life.
- •The lights automatically turn off after 15 minutes, which may feel restrictive in some use cases.
- •No integration with Arlo cameras or ability to receive motion alerts on Ring chimes, limiting smart home alert options.
- •The spotlights do not include cameras or video, so users cannot verify what caused the motion activation.
- •The device design is somewhat bulky compared to other compact lighting options.
- •The app, while improved, still lacks polish and usability features expected from a premium smart lighting product.
- •The required bridge for full smart features can frequently go offline without notification, causing loss of schedules and settings.
- •Lacks deterrent features such as audible warnings or 'you are being recorded' messages that some competitors include to scare off intruders.
