TLDR Review: Ring Smart Spotlight
Verdict
The Ring Smart Lighting Spotlight offers bright illumination and easy integration with Alexa and existing Ring devices, making it a solid choice if brightness and smart home compatibility are your priorities. However, be prepared for potential headaches with motion sensor accuracy, battery life, and dependency on a sometimes unreliable Ring Bridge. If you need more precise motion detection and camera alerts, consider pairing these lights with Ring doorbells or exploring other smart lighting options that offer integrated cameras and superior sensor tech. Overall, this spotlight stands out for brightness and ease of use but falls short in smart sensor reliability.
- Top pro:
- Very easy to install and connect to Alexa, allowing seamless integration into a smart home system.
- Top con:
- Motion sensors can be unreliable, frequently causing false motion detection notifications often triggered by shadows or nothing visible on camera.
Pros
- •Very easy to install and connect to Alexa, allowing seamless integration into a smart home system.
- •Works well with motion sensors without needing an extender or bridge, especially if you have Alexa devices with built-in Zigbee.
- •Twice as bright compared to similar models like the Beams MB360XT, providing strong and effective illumination.
- •Allows customizable duration settings for the light through the app or Alexa routines, offering good control over lighting schedules.
- •Reliable performance overall, with several users reporting stable operation after setup.
- •Excellent customer support with helpful follow-up for installation and replacement issues.
- •Lights automatically turn off after 15 minutes, which saves battery life if motion is only briefly detected.
- •Compatible with Ring Bridge and app controls for schedule, voice commands, and doorbell-triggered lighting.
- •Battery life can be decent with new or replacement batteries, improving brightness and reducing false triggers.
Cons
- •Motion sensors can be unreliable, frequently causing false motion detection notifications often triggered by shadows or nothing visible on camera.
- •Sometimes the spotlights fail to activate when passing by at night, limiting their usefulness in low-light conditions.
- •Poor battery life reported by multiple users, requiring replacements within weeks unless replacement units are obtained.
- •Requires a Ring Bridge that can be buggy: it frequently goes offline without notification and resetting it causes loss of settings and schedules.
- •Lacks a camera, so the system does not show what triggered the alert, making it less informative than doorbell cameras.
- •Motion sensor technology is inferior to that in Ring doorbells and some competing products, with a limited night detection range under 12 feet.
- •Bulky design that may not be aesthetically pleasing to all users.
- •Initial brightness may be lower until batteries are replaced or fully charged.
- •The app still has room for improvement, though recent updates have made it better.
- •Lights automatically turning off after 15 minutes can be inconvenient if longer illumination is desired without manual reactivation.
