TLDR Review: PNY CS2130 8TB SSD
Verdict
The PNY CS2130 8TB M.2 NVMe SSD is a robust choice for power users who need massive, fast, and reliable local storage for gaming, video editing, or large-scale media projects. It's especially attractive if you find it at a discounted price, given its strong performance and capacity. However, if you're on a budget or need a primary OS drive, you might want to explore more cost-effective SATA SSDs or smaller NVMe options. Also, be prepared for potentially tricky installation and having to source your own mounting screw. Overall, this SSD is a solid upgrade for those prioritizing capacity and speed in their builds.
- Top pro:
- Delivers reliable and consistently high performance with no frequent troubleshooting needed.
- Top con:
- Advertised speed advantages, especially between 1TB and 2TB models, can be overstated and may not translate into noticeably better real-world results.
Pros
- •Delivers reliable and consistently high performance with no frequent troubleshooting needed.
- •Installation is straightforward, with clear instructions and no recognition or formatting hassles.
- •Significantly faster than traditional SATA SSDs and previous slower models, boosting workflows especially with large RAW files and AAA games.
- •Large 8TB capacity is excellent for users needing extensive fast storage, ideal for gaming, media projects, and heavy software use.
- •Eliminates the need for SATA cables, simplifying PC builds and upgrades.
- •Supports smooth handling of demanding media tasks like 4K CANON Cine RAW footage and large export jobs in Adobe Lightroom.
- •Competitive value compared to similar high-end drives, especially if purchased at a good price point.
- •Performs well both as an internal drive and in Thunderbolt external dock setups.
- •Enhances overall productivity by providing rapid data access and near-instant responsiveness.
Cons
- •Advertised speed advantages, especially between 1TB and 2TB models, can be overstated and may not translate into noticeably better real-world results.
- •The product does not include a mounting screw, so users must supply their own to secure the drive physically.
- •Installation in laptops can be cumbersome, often requiring removal of multiple screws and potentially voiding warranty coverage if not careful.
- •Recommended more as a secondary storage solution rather than a primary OS drive, which may limit its appeal for some users.
- •Priced quite high at full MSRP ($1399.99 for 8TB), making SATA options potentially better cost-wise unless speed and capacity are essential.
