TLDR Review: PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum Water Fountain
Verdict
The PetSafe Drinkwell Platinum Dog and Cat Water Fountain is a durable, quiet, and attractive option that successfully encourages pets to drink more water thanks to its flowing water design and adjustable waterfall feature. However, it demands regular maintenance, including frequent cleaning and filter replacement, which may be a hassle for some owners. The filtration is adequate for hair and dirt but won’t tackle minerals or heavy metals, so temper expectations on water purity. If you have multiple cats or want a larger capacity, you might find the reservoir limiting. Also, be mindful that a few users ran into early pump failures, so consider the reliability risk. For similar benefits with slightly different features, keep an eye on other PetSafe fountains or comparable models that may offer larger reservoirs or enhanced filters.
- Top pro:
- The fountain encourages cats to drink more water compared to a regular bowl, with many pets attracted to the flowing water and engaging naturally with it.
- Top con:
- The filtration system does not remove heavy metals or minerals and is overall considered less effective in filtering beyond hair and dirt.
Pros

- •It operates very quietly, with motor noise being virtually nonexistent unless there's a blockage or mechanical issue.
- •The adjustable waterfall feature lets you choose between a heavier or lighter water flow to suit your pet’s preference.
- •Most parts are dishwasher safe (except the pump), making cleaning easier for busy pet owners.
- •The pump is durable, continuing to work well even with low water levels and infrequent cleaning.
- •The fountain is relatively easy to assemble with clear instructions and straightforward disassembly/reassembly for cleaning.

Cons
- •The filtration system does not remove heavy metals or minerals and is overall considered less effective in filtering beyond hair and dirt.
- •Frequent cleaning every 2-3 weeks is necessary to prevent algae buildup or unpleasant odors, which can become severe if neglected.
- •Some users find disassembling and reassembling the reservoir challenging, especially without assistance.
- •The reservoir may be too small for households with more than 2-3 cats and cannot stand on its own when being refilled.
- •Occasional overflow can happen, often because playful cats splash or paw in the water; a protective mat is recommended to prevent floor damage.
- •A few users experienced pump failure within minutes to hours of use, which may be due to manufacturing defects or power issues, with no easy local repair or return options.
- •The product requires regular filter replacement; depending on the number of pets, this might increase maintenance effort.
- •Filling the reservoir can be a bit tricky to avoid spills if not done carefully.
- •The internal plastic reservoir is prone to cracking if dropped.
