TLDR Review: Permatex Contact Cement
Verdict
Permatex 25905 is an excellent choice if you need a permanent, durable adhesive for small precision projects on materials like wood, leather, metal, or plastic—it's genuinely more reliable than competing options. However, this is absolutely a "measure twice, glue once" product due to its immediate permanent bond and tricky application with its runny consistency. The small tube size and brown color visibility mean it's best reserved for hidden repairs or small household fixes rather than large-scale or visible applications where repositioning flexibility matters.
- Top pro:
- Bonds quickly and securely to multiple material types including rubber, fabric, plastic, leather, metal, and vinyl
- Top con:
- Requires very careful, sparing application to prevent messy overflow and sticky spots
Pros
- •Bonds quickly and securely to multiple material types including rubber, fabric, plastic, leather, metal, and vinyl
- •Creates a permanent, durable bond that holds under heavy use and continuous wear
- •Sets with flexibility rather than brittleness, allowing it to withstand movement and stress
- •Works effectively for specialized applications like shoe sole repairs, countertop laminate, cork bonding, and instrument repair
- •Dries clear with excess that can be easily removed by rubbing once cured
- •True contact cement with straightforward application—spread on both surfaces and wait 10 minutes before joining
- •Convenient tube format ideal for small household projects
- •More durable and longer-lasting than competing products
Cons
- •Requires very careful, sparing application to prevent messy overflow and sticky spots
- •Creates a permanent bond with zero repositioning possible once surfaces contact—mistakes are costly
- •Small container size depletes quickly for larger projects, making it less economical
- •Very watery consistency that runs excessively and is difficult to control during application
- •Gets tacky rapidly, which can tear foam brushes and makes it challenging to apply over larger areas
- •Brown color is visible on the final product and creates noticeable dark lines on light-colored surfaces
- •Squeeze tube design provides minimal precision for glue placement
- •Can dry out quickly after opening, making it better suited for single-use rather than ongoing projects
