TLDR Review: MSI RTX 4090 Gaming X Slim
Verdict
The MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 4090 Gaming X Slim 24G is a compelling choice if you're looking for a high-end GPU that fits into compact builds without sacrificing quiet cooling and solid 4K gaming performance. However, if you expect massive overclocking headroom or a flawless 4K ultra experience at the highest FPS, this card might leave you wanting more—and the steep price tag makes it a tough sell for some. For those who prioritize size and noise levels over absolute peak power or cost efficiency, this is a strong contender. If you want to explore other options that might offer different balance points on price and performance, let us know!
- Top pro:
- Compact size makes it about half the width of full-sized RTX 4090 models, fitting nicely in ITX and smaller cases where larger cards won't.
- Top con:
- The card runs hotter than some expect, occasionally pushing the upper 70°C range under demanding loads.
Pros
- •Compact size makes it about half the width of full-sized RTX 4090 models, fitting nicely in ITX and smaller cases where larger cards won't.
- •Runs quietly despite producing noticeable heat, with good temperature management keeping it mostly between 60-70°C under load.
- •Features MSI’s Tri-Frozr 3 cooling system that effectively cools while staying silent.
- •Solid and durable build quality with a lighter frame that may eliminate the need for a support brace in some setups, although an anti-sag bracket is still recommended.
- •Capable of delivering 4K gaming at 60+ FPS in many titles, noticeably outperforming previous generation GPUs like the RTX 3080.
- •Includes 2 DisplayPort and 2 HDMI outputs, providing flexible connectivity options.
- •Attractive RGB lighting adds a nice visual touch, controllable via MSI software.
- •Highly efficient for power use when undervolted or power-limited, which can help reduce heat and improve longevity.
Cons
- •The card runs hotter than some expect, occasionally pushing the upper 70°C range under demanding loads.
- •MSI’s software for lighting and controls is not very user-friendly, causing some frustration among users.
- •Overclocking potential is limited on this slim, compact design — you won't see major performance gains from OC attempts.
- •Despite being marketed as the "world’s most powerful graphics card," real-world performance in GPU-heavy 4K games struggles to push beyond 70-80 FPS, which some users find underwhelming at this price point.
- •Price-to-performance ratio is poor; the card is considered overpriced and not worth the hype by many reviewers.
- •Heavier than typical for its size, so using the included anti-sag bracket is an important measure to avoid stress on the PCIe slot.
- •Some GPU-intensive titles like Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remake at native 4K ultra settings don’t run as smoothly as expected.
- •The card’s performance improvements over last-gen GPUs don’t always justify the steep cost upgrade.
