TLDR Review: MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio
Verdict
The MSI Gaming GeForce RTX 3090 GAMING X TRIO 24G is a premium, powerful graphics card that excels at 4K gaming and heavy AI workloads with quiet, effective cooling and a high-quality build. However, its massive size and weight bring installation challenges and potential motherboard strain, and some users report poor reliability and confusing warranty support. Given the steep price and only modest performance uplift compared to the RTX 3080, this card is best suited for enthusiasts with ample space and a serious need for 24GB VRAM. If reliability or fitting concerns worry you, consider checking alternate premium 3090 models that may offer better longevity or more refined support solutions.
- Top pro:
- Premium, visually striking design with no cheap features and subtle, tasteful LED lighting
- Top con:
- Very large and heavy card (323mm length, 2.7 slot width), which may cause fitting issues in smaller cases or with certain CPU coolers due to added thickness from backplate
Pros
- •Premium, visually striking design with no cheap features and subtle, tasteful LED lighting
- •Effective Tri-Frozr 2 cooling system with three quiet fans that run quieter than many other RTX 3090 models
- •Includes copper heat pipes on the backplate to help dissipate heat from the GDDR6X memory chips
- •Strong performance for 4K gaming, AI applications, and demanding workloads thanks to 24GB of VRAM
- •Runs smoothly with no coil whine or sudden frame drops reported by users
- •Generally reliable and stable under heavy loads, with some users reporting solid performance for over 18 months or even three years
- •Slight but noticeable feature improvements over standard RTX 3090 cards, making it one of the better 3090 variants available
- •Support bracket included to reduce sag, with a well-constructed durable build overall
- •Outperforms previous generation AMD cards like the 6950 XT in benchmarks
- •Easy to install for the most part, with a sturdy feel
Cons
- •Very large and heavy card (323mm length, 2.7 slot width), which may cause fitting issues in smaller cases or with certain CPU coolers due to added thickness from backplate
- •Card directs hot air into the case rather than exhausting it out the back, potentially raising internal case temps
- •The heavy weight puts significant strain on motherboard solder joints, especially if mounted vertically
- •Included support brace is flimsy and bends easily, providing inadequate support for the card’s substantial weight
- •Warranty is reportedly confusing and some users have experienced premature failures (under four months), calling overall reliability into question
- •Uses three PCIe power connectors, which might require additional cables for some power supplies
- •Only about a 10% performance gain over the RTX 3080, making it hard to justify the high price tag of around $3100
- •Support bracket installation can be tricky due to interference with motherboard screws and case PCI slot covers
- •Slightly less performance compared to some other premium 3090 variants like ASUS ROG Strix or MSI Suprim models
- •The card’s extra 3mm thick backplate may conflict with some aftermarket CPU coolers
