TLDR Review: Mosquito Magnet Patriot Plus
Verdict
The Mosquito Magnet MM4200B Patriot Plus Mosquito Trap is a highly effective mosquito control solution that delivers visible results within weeks and keeps operating costs relatively low thanks to propane fuel. However, buyers should be aware of recurring reliability issues and ongoing maintenance needs, which can impact overall satisfaction, especially considering the premium price point. It's best used as part of a broader mosquito management plan including habitat reduction. If you need a trap with less propane hassle but don't mind higher running costs, you might also want to consider a CO2 canister-based trap like the Biogents model for more intense mosquito areas, despite its expense. We recommend carefully weighing durability and service considerations before investing in this device.
- Top pro:
- Extremely effective at reducing mosquito populations within two weeks, greatly improving outdoor comfort.
- Top con:
- Prone to reliability and quality control issues, with some units randomly stopping after less than two months.
Pros
- •Extremely effective at reducing mosquito populations within two weeks, greatly improving outdoor comfort.
- •Propane fuel is relatively inexpensive and lasts about 21 days, making operation cost-effective compared to CO2 canisters.
- •Using the correct lure specific to your area enhances mosquito attraction and trap efficiency.
- •Combined with local mosquito breeding site reduction (like removing standing water), it provides thorough mosquito control.
- •The propane tank cover accessory helps keep tanks discreet and protected.
- •Both propane and CO2 traps catch hundreds of mosquitoes, and this model stands out for its cheaper propane running costs.
- •Works very well in areas with heavy mosquito presence, significantly reducing bites and visible mosquitoes around the yard.
- •Many users highly recommend it based on positive, real-world experiences.
- •When functioning, the trap consistently clears garden midges and other biting insects for extended periods.
Cons
- •Prone to reliability and quality control issues, with some units randomly stopping after less than two months.
- •Repairs require shipping the unit back to the manufacturer, causing significant downtime and loss of mosquito control progress.
- •The overall high price may feel unjustified given the durability and support challenges reported by some users.
- •Requires ongoing maintenance including propane refills every 3 weeks and periodic cleaning with CO2 cartridges and annual servicing.
- •Compatibility issues outside the USA: requires voltage converters, adaptor plugs, and gas head converters not included or mentioned by the seller.
- •Not a standalone solution; effectiveness depends heavily on reducing local mosquito breeding grounds.
- •Replacement attractants and propane gas can be inconvenient to manage for some users.
- •Some users experienced the trap working well for about a year before breaking down, raising concerns about longevity.
