TLDR Review: Microsoft Surface Laptop (2024)
Verdict
The Microsoft Surface Laptop (2024) is a sleek, lightweight premium Windows 11 laptop focusing on productivity and all-day battery life with a sharp, vivid screen and smooth performance for everyday tasks. Its cutting-edge Snapdragon X Plus ARM processor combined with integrated AI features makes it a forward-looking device best suited for users who need excellent portability, strong battery, and AI-enhanced productivity rather than gaming or heavy graphics work. However, limited ports and storage, alongside a still-maturing AI ecosystem, prevent it from being an all-round powerhouse. If you want stronger gaming support or more extensive port options, you might want to consider higher-powered Intel or AMD-based alternatives, but for stylish, efficient daily use with innovative AI, this Surface Laptop stands out.
- Top pro:
- The 13.8" HDR PixelSense Flow touchscreen offers stunning visuals with bright whites, deep blacks, vibrant colors, and a sharp 2304 x 1536 resolution.
- Top con:
- Limited port selection: only 2 USB-C ports and 1 USB-A port, lacking a built-in microSD slot, which may require purchasing additional hubs or adapters for expanded connectivity.
Pros
- •The 13.8" HDR PixelSense Flow touchscreen offers stunning visuals with bright whites, deep blacks, vibrant colors, and a sharp 2304 x 1536 resolution.
- •Equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus deca-core processor and 16GB LPDDR5x RAM, it delivers smooth and efficient multitasking and productivity performance, rivaling many Intel and AMD CPUs but with better power efficiency.
- •Excellent all-day battery life that can easily handle typical tasks like writing, browsing, meetings, and media playback without frequent recharging.
- •Sleek, lightweight, and sturdy aluminum chassis with a modern thin bezel design, plus premium materials including at least 25% recycled content for eco-friendly appeal.
- •The keyboard is comfortable, backlit, and coupled with a highly responsive haptic touchpad that offers customizable right-click and supports Windows gestures.
- •Integrates AI-powered Windows 11 Copilot+ features with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit, enhancing productivity with smart assistance, AI art tools, live captions, language translation, and studio camera effects.
- •Fast charging support with a 39W power supply (or faster chargers sold separately), allowing quick top-ups when needed.
- •High-quality webcam with 1080p resolution and dual studio microphones with voice focus provide clear video calls and conferencing.
- •Magnetic power connector adds convenient safety by allowing the cable to detach easily if pulled, reducing the risk of accidents.
- •Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth, ensuring fast and reliable connections.
Cons
- •Limited port selection: only 2 USB-C ports and 1 USB-A port, lacking a built-in microSD slot, which may require purchasing additional hubs or adapters for expanded connectivity.
- •Gaming performance is weak due to ARM architecture and integrated GPU, making it unsuitable for serious or demanding gaming.
- •Though Windows on ARM runs most Intel/x86 applications via emulation smoothly, there can be occasional minor hiccups or slower performance in some apps.
- •AI Copilot+ features are currently somewhat limited and require an active internet connection, with some content and feature restrictions that may frustrate power users.
- •The proprietary magnetic charging port plus USB-C charging can be inconvenient and confusing, especially since USB-C charging does not support more than 15W from the port on the device.
- •Despite strong AI integration, some bundled AI creative tools feel gimmicky and less practical for professional-grade graphic design or intensive creative work.
- •Storage is limited to 256GB SSD and is not user-upgradable, so users needing more space should plan carefully at purchase.
- •Lack of a numeric keypad on the keyboard may be a drawback for users reliant on number entry.
- •The screen’s unique 3:2 aspect ratio and resolution can make finding perfectly fitting wallpapers challenging for some users.
- •Repairability and upgradability are limited despite a better-than-average design; internal components like RAM and SSD are soldered.
