TLDR Review: MGC Switchplate Wireless Gaming Controller for Nintendo Switch
Verdict
The MGC Switchplate Wireless Controller is a stylish and compact third-party option packed with features like adjustable rumble, gyro control, and programmable buttons that make it a solid choice for younger players or adults with smaller hands. While it doesn’t fully match Nintendo’s official Pro controller in comfort, uniform button feel, or ultra-low latency, its affordable price and rich feature set shine in typical casual and family gaming scenarios. If you value style customization and want a controller good for compact hands, this is worth considering. However, if you need the most precise input or a controller better suited for larger hands and competitive play, you might want to look into more established Pro-style options. If you want a similarly feature-rich but potentially more comfortable or reliable alternative, the Voyee Switch Wireless Controller is worth checking out for its excellent build, additional mappable triggers, and robust dual-mode functionality.
- Top pro:
- Compact and kid-friendly design makes it perfect for smaller hands, great for children or adults with petite grips.
- Top con:
- The smaller size may be uncomfortable or feel cramped for users with larger hands, limiting who will find it ideal.
Pros
- •Compact and kid-friendly design makes it perfect for smaller hands, great for children or adults with petite grips.
- •Comes with two magnetic swappable faceplates (black and white), allowing easy style changes that blend seamlessly with the controller body.
- •Supports premium features often missing in third-party controllers, including adjustable rumble, gyroscope control, and programmable grip buttons.
- •Responsive buttons and smooth analog sticks (once broken in), providing better gameplay feel compared to Joy-Cons or cheaper knockoffs.
- •Wireless connectivity pairs quickly and can wake the Nintendo Switch from docked mode, a convenience many third-party controllers lack.
- •USB-C charging with a long cable helps preserve the charging port and ensures fast recharge.
- •Offers a good balance of affordability and essential features, making it a budget-friendly alternative for families needing multiple controllers.
- •Durable build quality with a sturdy plastic shell and faceplates that secure firmly via magnets, avoiding the cheap, flimsy feel common in third-party options.
Cons
- •The smaller size may be uncomfortable or feel cramped for users with larger hands, limiting who will find it ideal.
- •Some users find initial analog stick stiffness, which requires a break-in period to become smoother.
- •Buttons have inconsistent tactile feedback—the D-pad, triggers, and face buttons feel noticeably different from each other, which could bother experienced gamers.
- •Input latency is slightly higher than official Pro controllers, with a delay noticeable in fast-paced or precision-demanding games.
- •Faceplates can be tricky to remove at first, sometimes feeling like they might require tools or excessive force.
- •Calibration issues reported with the right analog stick, especially in games needing precise control; may require recalibration if disconnected.
- •Controller times out and needs manual reconnection after inactivity, even when connected via cable, which can interrupt gameplay.
- •Limited button remapping options—only specific custom buttons are programmable; face buttons like A and B cannot be reassigned.
- •Home button placement may be awkward or prone to accidental presses.
- •Some users report lack of solid manufacturer support or difficulty in getting warranty help if problems arise.
