TLDR Review: MageGee MK-Box Keyboard
Verdict
The MageGee Portable 60% Mechanical Gaming Keyboard is a solid choice for those who prioritize compact size, good build quality, and satisfying mechanical key feedback without breaking the bank. However, its loud blue switches and lack of advanced customization options make it less suitable for quiet offices or users wanting highly programmable keyboards. If noise is a concern, consider seeking out the red switch version for a quieter typing experience, or explore other budgets mechanical keyboards with quieter switches. For gaming portability combined with decent durability and style, this keyboard delivers well.
- Top pro:
- Compact and small size fits nicely on desks, making it ideal for tight spaces and portable setups.
- Top con:
- The Jixian blue switches are loud and potentially obnoxious, making the keyboard unsuitable for quiet or shared environments.
Pros
- •Compact and small size fits nicely on desks, making it ideal for tight spaces and portable setups.
- •Keys are responsive and provide a satisfying mechanical click with good tactile feedback, appreciated by both gamers and typists.
- •LED backlight adds a subtle, cool aesthetic without being overpowering or distracting.
- •Sturdy build quality feels durable and solid, with no cheap or flimsy plastic sensations.
- •Equipped with a rare removable USB-C cable in a convenient location for a budget mechanical keyboard, enhancing portability and cable longevity.
- •Comes with high-quality doubleshot keycaps, including extra colored keycaps (orange WASD and tenkey replacements) for customization.
- •Performs well for gaming on platforms like PS5, offering good input responsiveness.
- •Very good value for the quality offered, suitable for both gaming and office use.
- •Keys are well-calibrated with a light touch requirement, reducing finger fatigue during long typing sessions.
Cons
- •The Jixian blue switches are loud and potentially obnoxious, making the keyboard unsuitable for quiet or shared environments.
- •The keyboard initially misses a tab keycap in the set, requiring users to manually swap keycaps to match the pictured layout.
- •Lacks advanced customization features such as QMK firmware support, limiting remapping or macro capabilities.
- •The hollow base design creates echo and pinging sounds, which some users find distracting; foam or tape can reduce this but doesn’t eliminate loud switches.
- •Some keys have been reported to occasionally stop working, requiring a keyboard reset to fix the issue.
- •Extra keycaps sometimes do not fit the keyboard properly, which can be frustrating for users wanting full customization.
- •The keyboard’s sound profile is not premium or refined; it’s basic and functional but not designed for audiophiles.
- •The blue switch version might be too noisy for many users; the red switch variant is recommended for a quieter experience.
